John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. The back of the scale has a small screw which reads 1915(don't know if date or item# Face of scale is brass. Face measures approximately 7 inches in diameter. Hangers at top and bottom add another approximately 3 inches when extended. The scale is approximately 1 3/8 inches deep. It weighs approximately 2.4 pounds. Up for auction is an Original Stanley No 80 Cabinet Scraper Plane New Britain Conn. USA. The blade is also original unlike most of these style blades that are just flat stock steel. Overall it is about 11 1/2" long. It does have some surface rust but nothing major. It could use a good cleaning and oiling for display. This would be a great addition to a collection or for use.
