This is a copper plate engraving from the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. Published between 1801 and 1810 in 24 volumes. The Plate is an antique Hand Colored engraving titled Aborigines of Hindoostan on the Coromandol Coast. Plate reads Published in London, February 1809 by J. Wilkes. Artist(sculp) was J Chapman. Engraving is on a sheet measuring approximately 8.5x11 inches. Engraving shows plate mark and is mounted inside a store bought double mat, with exposed image measuring 8x10 inches. Mat is mounted to a piece of cardboard. It appears that the engraving is mounted to the mat back sheet with some sort of archival/linen tape. Entire piece, matted and backed, measures 11x14 inches. Engraving is in good condition with some minor spotting. Image appears to be unaffected by condition issue noted. Color in images is fairly accurate. This is a beautiful solid silver Victorian Card case. It has a lovely central cartouche finely engraved with swags. Leaves flowers and a violin. There is a full set of very clear Birmingham hallmarks for 1865. The maker's mark is"ES" for the renowned silversmith, Edward Smith. The case measures approx. 3 7/8 inches x 2 5/8 inches(9.8 cm x 6.8 cm) It weighs 78.5 g(2.77 oz or 2.52 troy oz) There is a very slight and small depression on the case as can be seen in the last photograph. Major General Nathanael Greene 3rd Quartermaster General March 1778-August 1780 Nathanael Greene was born in Rhode Island in 1742 of Quaker parentage. From boyhood he was trained to work in the mills and the forge owned by his father. While he attended no college. He displayed an aptitude for study, and his reading was guided by Ezra Stiles, who became president of Yale. In the face of the impending struggle with England he had helped to organize a militia company in 1774. But his fellow members denied him a lieutenancy because of his limping gait, and some went so far as to suggest that even as a private he would detract from the smart appearance of the company. Greene was deeply mortified, but his ... morecharacter is revealed by the fact that he remained in the company as a private. In 1775 he was a member of the General Assembly as he had been in 1770 to 1772. When the news of the Battle of Lexington arrived. Greene and his fellow militiamen set out for Boston. The private became a brigadier general in the Continental Army on June 22, 1775. For the next three years he was in constant service as a field commander. Leipzig, 1837, original hand colour We are pleased to offer this scarce and important 19th century German atlas(Espenhorst PPII 31.1.1.2) compiled under the direction of the renowned Prussian military cartographer and Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Streit(1772-1839) The atlas was printed by the Hinrichs book publishing firm under the distinguished imprimatur of the German cartographer Dr. Christian Gottfried Daniel Stein(1771-1830) as it had its genesis as an accompaniment to Stein's influential Handbuch der Geographie. Jürgen Espenhorst in his magisterial study of 19th century German atlas production Petermann's Planet notes that Stein never contributed any cartography to any edition of the atlas ... moreyet"Stein" atlases such as this example were marketed decades after his death. While Stein never had anything to do with a single map. His Handbuch went through seven editions from 1808 to 1872 so the marketing strategy was probably intended to feed off the prolonged success of that work and to have a"name" like Stieler associated with the subsequent editions of the atlas. Discerning collectors will instantly recognise the scarcity of this atlas- indeed. Of the eight editions Streit issued annually between 1832 and 1839 only 23 extant copies have been identified by Espenhorst. The rather lavishly-produced atlas includes extensive text commentaries and statistical tables related to the maps while the maps are of course elegant copperplate engravings with delicate original hand colour. Most masterfully engraved by the Leipzig artist and engraver Heinrich Leutemann Sr. whose Heinrich Leutemann Jr. enjoyed considerable fame as an artist in the second half of the 19th century. Demonstrating the classic look of the early wood engraving era applied to an allegorical representation of the feastday that has come to be most closely identified with the Irish culture! This great antique wood engraving. Titled" An Allegorical Representation of the Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. was made in the early 1850s. This image. Created in the"allegorical" fashion popular in the middle of the Victorian Era, is a composite engraving, incorporating a variety of scenes all bound together by the overall theme of St. Patrick’s Day. It is truly a collage of pictorial elements. In the center of this engraving is a cross made of shamrocks. In the middle of which is ... morea small image of a mother holding her baby. To either side of this are two large scenes. One shows St. Patrick converting Ireland to Christianity, and the other involves a parallel image from the 19th century. However, this latter scene does not involve conversion to Christianity, but rather to abstinence from alcohol, as can be seen by the Temperance banner. And to the bottom of this engraving are several smaller scenes. These involve a quiet celebration at home and a cheerful dance. Bit also there is a scene of a street battle, with an Irishman taking off his coat and wielding overhead his shillelagh! It is the tiny details that make this such a fantastic image. Note. For example, that in the background of one of the smaller scenes, in tiny detail, are scaffolds by which several bodies are hung. These are so small that they are hard to make out with the naked eye. This is a short shank cornet mouthpiece that was supplied with a Harry Pedler& Sons cornet. The shank is fairly large and as it inserts very shallow into my two cornets. I feel confident that this would be a good fit in an Olds Cornet that requires a large shank. Combined. One price shipping will be offered on all mouthpieces this week.
