Description: ... moreAn extremely scarce map. This is Willis Thrall's 1831 pocket map of Connecticut. Thrall's map, which is dated at bottom center, covers the entire state of Connecticut as well as the adjacent Long Island Sound. Connecticut is here divided into eight color coded counties. Inset plans of New Haven, Hartford, and the New England States, rest in the lower right quadrant. The upper right quadrant features a profile of the Farmington Canal. A list of Connecticut governors starting with John Winthrop of 1665, and updated to include John S. Peters of 1831, appears in the upper left quadrant. According to the Connecticut map historian Edmond Thompson, this map was first engraved by Daggert and issued between 1827 and 1829. This is the second edition, published in 1831 with an update to the list of governors and the names of Thrall and Ely added to the imprint. It was later reissued by different publishers in 1836, 1847, 1854 and 1858. This edition and the virtually unknown first edition are by far the most desirable and are found in few collections- a rare opportunity. It is also noteworthy that this map was published in New Haven, Connecticut. Size: Printed area measures 18.5 inches high by 22.5 inches wide. Condition: Good condition. Detached from and missing original binder. Some minor damage just encroaching on the left border were once attached to binder- see image. Backed with archival tissue for stability. The map names property owners. With lot sizes in acres, and locates roads, schools, and churches. It labels the Cleveland, Elyria& Western Railway, an interurban electric railroad which was the first suburban streetcar line running into the city of Cleveland. The map is drawn on a scale of three inches to one mile. And area labeled Parma, astride a tributary of Big Creek, is today's Parma Heights. The township itself is divided into four tracts: Ely, Tukerman, Cheny, and Blake. An inset at the right shows Walter's Partition, Blake's Tract, in more detail. A second inset is labeled"West Park P.O. and shows Lot 12. Rockport Hamlet, on a scale of 400 feet to one inch. Details include the Buckeye Fish Company, the Lake Shore& Michigan Southern Railroad, and the Cleveland, Elyria& Western electric line along Lorain Avenue. The map and insets are printed on a single sheet which measures 17" x 28" and is copyrighted © 1903 by H.B. Stranahan. 1825-1906 Bishop of Ely Information taken from Wikipedia: Lord Alwyne Compton(18 July 1825– 4 April 1906) was an Anglican bishop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Compton was the fourth son of Spencer Compton. 2nd Marquess of Northampton, and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. His first post was as Curate at Horsham, after which he was Rector of Castle Ashby, a post he held for 26 years. He was also Archdeacon of Oakham for the four years of this. In 1879, he was appointed Dean of Worcester, and then in 1886 to the See of Ely, He held this position until 1905, when he resigned and retired to Canterbury, where he died the following year. The Secretary of John Moore, Bishop of Ely. Thomas Pyle was the minister of St. Nicholas's Chapel at King's Inn. He had a special relationship with Moore who had ordained his as a priest in 1698. Moore's chaplain, William Wiston, had stated that Pyle was one of the two best scholars he had ever examined. Pyle became well known for his writings including on the Bangorian controversy. Dr. John Moore served as the Bishop of Norwich before Ely. At the time of his death in 1714 he had the largest library in England, some 30,000 volumes. King George I, at his ... morecorornation in the same year, purchased the library and presented it to Cambridge University. It nearly tripled the material that was originally there and is still virtually intact and is now known as The Royal Library. In this letter. FEARN CHAWNER Presented is a great pair of Georgian English sterling silver master salt spoons. These pieces date to 1810 and were made by William Ely. William Fearn, William Chawner. The spoons are well made, in the classic Fiddle Thread pattern, with a shell shaped bowl. The fronts of the terminals of the handles are not monogrammed, and have space for an inscription. The back of each handle has a nice engraved crest of a lion's head in profile next to an armoured leg. The spoons are in great overall condition. As the photo points out. One of the spoons has a split to the side of the bowl. There are no other splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. Each piece is hallmarked on the back ... moreof the stem with the lion passant for sterling silver. The date letter P for 1810, the King George III head duty mark, and the maker's mark for William Ely, William Fearn, William Chawner. Each spoon is about 4 3/8 inches long.
