Which were divided anciently into hundreds, Yorkshire was divided first into three ridings and then into numerous wapentakes within each riding. The separate Lieutenancy for the riding was established after the Restoration, and the ridings each had separate Quarter Sessions. For statistical purposes in the 19th century an East Riding of Yorkshire registration county was designated, ... moreconsisting of the entirety of the Poor Law Unions of Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Howden, Hull, Patrington, Pocklington, Sculcoates, Skirlaugh and York. A county council for the East Riding of Yorkshire was set up in 1889, covering an administrative county which did not cover the county borough of Hull, but otherwise had the same boundaries as the historic riding. He moved to France on 17/4/1915. He was wounded on 29/6/1915. War diary for this date states: Sgt Vavey killed by bomb accident, Pte Deakin wounded at the same time and died of his wounds, and SGT PIZER and Pte Temperton badly wounded' Service records state wounded on 30/6/1915. An attractive and detailed steel-engraved map. Published by Archibald Fullarton& Co. in James Bell's“ The Parliamentary Gazetteer of England and Wales” Vignette view of Beverley Minster. On quite heavy paper. The printed area is approx 24x18cm on an untrimmed sheet approx 32x26cm; vertical centrefold as issued. Engraving platemark visible the whole way round. Condition is good. Paper feels healthy. A sharp impression. The map area is clean and bright; some light discolouration along the centrefold. Some light browning and spotting towards the edges of the sheet. This is a lovely colour map of the East Ridings of Yorkshire which was taken from the book"The County Maps of Old England" by Thomas MOULE which was published in 1990. The page measures approximately 9.5" x 12" check the photos) and the map has been printed onto good thick quality paper. It would look lovely framed! Thomas MOULE was one of the most distinctive and best-loved of early Victorian mapmakers and he first published his maps in 1830. His work is often compared to his 17th century predecessor John Speed who published similar maps in the 1630's(many of which I have also got listed on ebay) Because it has been taken from a book there is the description of the next map in the book on the back of this map. There are also four obituaries of officers who served with the regiment, clipped from contemporary newspapers and laid loose inside the book. Published by Harrison& Sons, Ltd in 1928, a first edition. Size: 225 x 148 mm and weighing approximately 1.15kg when packed for shipping. Some wear and light handling marks to the cover, good condition. A 5 mm tear to the base of the title page, afew pages have some foxing to the page edges and some discolouration to page two which has been used to store some contemporary newspaper cuttings. The foldout maps are clean and without tears or creases. Overall the contents are in good to very good condition. Outstanding WW2 Military Medal for Dunkirk - East Yorkshire Regiment
A BEF 1940 Military Medal GVI to Sergeant Herbert Fenwick. 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment originally from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, for his gallantry with the BEF in France and Belgium between 12 May and 1 June 1940, especially on 19 May 1940 when his Battalion carried out a daylight withdrawal whilst still in contact with the enemy. Evacuated from La Panne and Dunkirk 1 June 1940, the Battalion suffering 80 casualties on the beaches and at sea whilst under constant air attack. Commissioned into the Lincolnshire Regiment in October 1940 he died of wounds received in a training accident 22 May 1942, whilst serving as a Captain at the Holkham Battle School, Norfolk. Military Medal GV 4340929 SJT H Fenwick E York R. With copy London Gazette entries for MM. Copy recommendation, copies from the Battalion War Diary covering the period 12 May ... moreto 1 June 1940, casualty details etc. The MM still on the investiture pin, original ribbon. MM London Gazette 11 July 1940 4340929 Sergeant Herbert Fenwick. 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on 19 May 1940 when commanding a Platoon in a most exposed position. The Germans had a covered line of approach to a river bank and Sergeant Fenwick's Platoon was occupying some buildings on the opposite bank. Sergeant Fenwick selected the positions for his sections with great skill and showed a splendid example of courage and coolness under severe enemy fire. Throughout the operations between 12 May and 1 June Sergeant Fenwick constantly distinguished himself as a leader' The War Diary of the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment records- On 12 May the Battalion moved into Belgium and on 14 May took up a defensive position as left Battalion of the Reserve Brigade of 3 Division.
