Antique Victorian Red Work Towel- Bird Bath Victorian and Edwardian red work embroidered linen was popular in the last half of the 19th century and into the first few decades of the 20th. It was characterized by charming designs that could be used in practical ways. Simple stitches and the materials were in expensive and readily available. Over the next few weeks I'll be listing many pieces from an extensive collection filled with examples of red work wash towels, quilt patches, bed linens and other household linens. Offered here is an especially charming bath towel trimmed with hand crochet lace. Circa 1880-1900. The fabric is off white linen and it was embroidered with the words Splash Splash across the top and has a birds and bird bath motif. The motif features six birds(seven if you count the one deep in the bird bath) in a basin ... moreset in grasses and leafy plants. It was daintily hand stitched with red thread. Now faded to a rose pink. The lace was hand crocheted from linen thread. Measures about 20 1/4 inches x 29 inches including fringe. Clean. In addition to thread fading there is a faint oxidation line across the towel. Some stitch breaks and a few repairs. Even so. You are bidding on: A VINTAGE HANDPAINTED AND GOLD GILT APOTHECARY JAR. SELS DU BAIN" BATH SALTS MID-CENTURY OR OLDER JEANNE ROBINETTE OF CALIFORNIA EXCLUSIVELY FOR CARA NOME. Gorgeous older apothecary jar is about 3 3/4" diameter and stands about 8 1/4" tall with the lid. Is a beautiful robins' egg blue on white base pottery. With handpainted floral panel and gilded trim and lid knob. Typically this gilt trim would be 22k gold, but I can't say for sure as no karat weight is given. Sels du Bain" handpainted on the lid translates from French to"Bath Salts. There are NO chips. Cracks, hairlines, fleabites or repairs. While there may be a couple original-manufacture quirks like minute paint slips, there is little or no wear to paint and gold trim. And anything that may look like damage in photos is simply light ... morereflecting off the very shiny glazing. There IS an all-over crazing in the glaze which attests to the age of the piece. See photos. Markings on the bottom are: Jeanne Robinette of California Hand Decorated Originals" and underglaze stamp: Made Exclusively for Cara Nome. Impossible to date this piece exactly. But there are a few clues. I collect a little bit(or a mountain! of everything; I don't remember exactly where I got this apothecary jar. But I've had it for maybe 15 years or more. the crazing in the glaze is the sort that cannot be faked. And puts this pottery somewhere around 50 years or better. United Drug first produced Cara Nome perfumes as early as 1918. And the scent/brand was apparently very popular through the mid-century. I've seen information that indicates these apothecary jars were manufactured in the 1950's. Some of which were used display items in Rexall drug jars, but this one does not have Rexall lettering stamped on the back. Plenty of photos above.
