Here is page 7 having a map of Spain or Hispania as it was referred to in ancient times. The map shows Spain starting from the north at its border with Gallia(France) and continuing to the south to the straights of Hercules(today Gibraltar) This map was taken out of a damaged copy of the Long's Classical Atlas(see the last three photos) Which is not part of this sale. This sale is for the map only. These maps would look great once properly framed. They were engraved by GE Sherman Printed by Henry Seibert of New York. The maps show quite a bit of detail and are nicely colored. It shows cities, rivers, mountain ranges, water bodies and longitudinal and latitude lines with London being the zero. The cities are all named after their historic names rather than their modern names. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 1856. The map is full of the spurious geography of the period with inaccurately located large lakes. Rivers and mountains. The title cartouche incorporates African wildlife and sailing ships add further interest to the map. Date: 1702(dated 1699) Scherer's Atlas Novus' 1702-1710) Heinrich Scherer was a professor of mathematics in Munich and a devout Jesuit. Scherer's'Atlas Novus' forms a singularly unusual. Almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. Most of the maps appear to have been prepared between 1699 and 1700 and were engraved by Leonard Hecknaeur, Joseph Montelegre or Matthus Wolfgang. This beautiful large-scale map of"Palestine or The Holy Land" was produced by Geographer to the Queen of Scotland. Alexander Keith Johnston and published in 1882 in his"Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Johnston apprenticed to James Kirkwood& Sons, Engravers in 1820. In 1826, he partnered with his brother William in W. A.K. Johnston. He died July 9th, 1871 in Yorkshire but the business continued under his name until the late 1890's. There is a small brownish mark on the left page of this map. Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. The maps have a single fold in the center. The maps are high quality lithographs with tasteful and appealing colors. The maps are printed on one side only. Condition These maps are very good condition. The maps themselves are clean and bright. There are a few marks in the margins of a few of the maps. This will be evident in the scanned images. Which are high quality and unedited. The maps are untrimmed and are suitable for framing. Remarks The quality of these maps surpasses that of most. If not all, its American-produced contemporaries. These maps are much nicer than any of the Rand McNally or Cram's ... moreAtlas editions I've seen. For the 55 maps covering U.S. states. I haven't seen better maps anywhere. The maps are also very detailed. Many states are treated on two separate maps.

It is a revised edition illustrating the new boundaries and territorial changes effected by the Peace Treaties from World War One. The book measures 14" x 10 ¾" It has a red cloth covered hardcover, with black lettering. There are 40 plain backed maps. Which would be suitable for framing if required, plus a 32 page index to place names. The maps are printed on a high quality smooth paper. But the index pages and endpapers are a softer and thicker type of paper. The map pages are in GOOD CONDITION. With only slight signs of general ageing and no tears or marks, apart from Map 1(The World) which has a tiny burn mark(see photo below) The endpapers have light foxing and a few small edge chips. The hard cover is slightly worn on the inner binding. There is some corner wear and a small split at the bottom corner of the spine.
