An original 18th century chart of Dundee. Aberdeen and Montrose on the east coast of Scotland by Greenvile Collins. The chart includes soundings, three compass roses and rhumb lines. There is an attractive decorative dedication cartouche and a further cartouche at lower-right. The map is tastefully hand-coloured with good margins. It is printed on excellent quality 18th century laid paper and is ready to be framed and glazed. This is an original 18th century engraved map and not a modern facsimile. Greenvile Collins was a naval officer who was appointed'Hydrographer to the King' for his outstanding surveying abilities. In 1681 Charles II commissioned Collins to survey the entire coasts of Great Britain in order to replace the old Dutch charts that the British had previously relied upon. But there is a large c.16cm tear on the right hand side. It can be lined up when framing so that it will be scarcely noticable. This map comes from an antique publication. Entitled"THE COMPREHENSIVE ATLAS& GEOGRAPHY OF THE WORLD, Compiled from the most authentic sources under the supervision of WG Blackie PhD, Editor of the Imperial Gazetteer. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic, blank on the reverse. It is a miniature size map that would frame up nicely. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 4 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches(12x15cm) on a page measuring 6 by 7(15x18cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic.
