Ornate Russian Silver Salt Dish w Original Gold Wash Nicholas I Reign Ca 1830's
This is a rare gold washed open salt dish/bowl very ornate. Circa 1830's Russian 84 zol. 875/1000 silver) from Moscow. The marks in the the bowl/ dish are for the maker and appear to be in Cyrillic script"HB" which correspond to latin letters NV, there is also the Moscow city mark circa 1830, and the silver mark 84, and the bottom has the Assayer's mark, also in cyr. HA" which is for Nickolai Lukich Dubrovin(Postnikova- Loseva#2104) he worked 1822- 1855 in Moscow( the city marks changed over the course of the years) but the actual date is illegible. This piece dates from circa 1830's durring the reign of Nicholas I. The actual maker is unknown at this time. We have shown the sides, and bottom as we are unsure if there are old repairs or this was original work, appears to be some excess solder, but I have seen this ... moreon older items before. It appears to be original, and there appears to be some uneveness in the way it stands, which we have not attemped to fix or repair as pieces of this age from Russian can be difficult to find. there is some wear in places to the gold, and some scratches which one would expect to a piece this age. It is approx. 3 1/4" long x 2 5/8" wide x 1 1/2" high. Size- approx 3 1/4" long x 2 5/8" wide x 1 1/2" high Condition- some scratches. Also minor loss of gold wash in places, some uneveness in the way it sits(we have not- no will attempt to"fix" there is solder on under side which appears to be original, have seen this on older pieces. I had my metal detector and I asked him where would be a good place to search for coins. He took me to the old cemetery and said this was a good place. I started searching and 20 minutes later I recovered the first coin. Over the next 2 weeks I recovered the hoard of hundreds of objects. The history of the coins is up for debate. This is a rare old wooden surveyors compass. Of the type used in the 1700's and early 1800's. In the colonial days brass was in short supply so many of the earliest compasses are made of wood. This compass measure 15 inches long and the compass needle measures5 3/4 inches long. It is in great shape except you can see one of the sight vanes has a pretty clean break, needs to be pinned and glued and I do not have the talent to accomplish this. They are quite delicate and the beautiful lobed hollow caps stand out because of their elegance; they are made of blown glass too. Great cruet stand in engraved silver. Fully decorated with vegetal motives and exquisite volutes. The decoration covers the handle with its delicate and wavy designs. Circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 2 3/4" tall x 2 3/4" wide with an applied acanthus type loop handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze. The small mug has a wonderful engine turned base. The mug is transfer printed in black with a spectacular scrolling with whisps of fern or seaweed and flowers surrounding the name. The name" MARTHA" in a lovely type is placed at the front of the mug. The mug is rare as the name Martha was very uncommon and near impossible to find on early children's ware. The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire ... moredistrict. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit. Used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the early to mid-19th century. The images were taken from copperplate engravings used in children's books of the same period. The condition of this exceptional mug is EXCELLENT. Clean and bright with no wear. Normal stilt marks. Nicely potted and the transfers were applied with a good deal of attention to detail. It is amazing that this little piece was made for a child so long ago! Such a very unusual eclectic design points to an artistic cabinetmaker unafraid to step forward with a new creation. The design is truly a departure from the usual style of the typical English forms. Of course, one can see an earlier Regency inspiration in the design however this sideboard celebrates the function of those classical forms. And just in time before the Victorians began to combine sub-styles that were not always successful and furniture making became industrialized. The foliate carving is subtle yet bold in its restraint; just enough to give movement to ones eye. The exaggerated size of the post scrolls are very dramatic and seem almost ... moremodern. 70 years before Nouveau,90 before Deco. Confirmation I guess that inspiration always comes from the past. The quality of construction is evident in the choice of wood and in the many undulating shapes. Observe the concave design of the drawers and imagine the time required to sculpt the shape. The body is pine- with the narrower graining you typically see on continental pieces. The knobs on the interior drawers were originally all ivory. There are some replacements. The key escutcheons on the exterior are mother-of-pearl, and the ones on the lower three drawers are missing. Measurements: 68" tall, 39" wide and 21" deep. The piece that projects under the top drawer and pediment measures 42" ... morewide and 22.5" deep. The fall-front panel measures 35" wide and 21.5" deep. There are some minor repairs to the exterior and some veneer chips mostly on the edge of the upper portion. The top drawer and plinth above sit on the body of the desk, but do not have any sort of stabilizing pegs. The top surface of the"plinth" that sits on the top of the piece is unfinished, as it would not have been visible. RARE Pastorelli Signed Banjo or Wheel Barometer Circa 1830's Rare Pastorelli Banjo or Wheel Barometer. I believe this barometer is from around the 1820's to 1860's. The measurements are 39 inches long by 10 inches wide. There are 4 components to this barometer. Dry& Damp gauge at the top. The hand is there but not attached. The 12 inch long thermometer. The 8 inch in diameter barometer with bow glass front with original hands. The level is still working and is signed by Pastorelli Cross St Hatton Garden London(missing the glass cover) On the top of the wood frame is missing the scroll piece and the wood trim on the opposite side. Burr of New York during the 1830s-50s, but almost certainly to the earlier end of this time period, circa 1830s. The handle is in a classical Fiddle pattern and the bowl is large and deep. This ladle is most likely for soup but can also be used as a large punch ladle. Because of the traditional, antique design of the piece, it can be used with virtually any other silver serving pieces. Imperial Stone Eastern Star Antique Dinner Plate(Needs TLC) Offered for auction: A gorgeous polychrome dinner plate in a pattern called"Eastern Star. It features a scalloped rim. Brown border with orange and dark blue floral designs, and a floral center and border. This older plate measures 10-3/8 inches wide. It has six large chips around the rim(see closeup photos at top. Orange arrows) There is also fine overall crazing, and some heavier craze lines on the underside. So, this plate is being sold as a"labor of love, needing some"tender loving care" or restoration. The plate is clearly marked on the bottom with" Imperial Stone/ Eastern Star/ J-R. along with a red number 3723 in script. I have not been able to identify a maker or age with certainty. Antique Pulse glass from the 1830's
Antique pulse glass 1830"s I don't know a thing about this and my research has turned up zilch! It comes with a note and written on the bottom of the box it says it was given to her mother in the 1830's by her mothers father. From what I can tell and have proved is you can take the tube in your hand and when the temperature reaches normal body temp. the bulbs at the ends start to bubble. sort of like a magic childs temperature monitor. I'm not sure of it's purpose other than to amuse children. I know my daughter was really intriged by it. I tried to show the action in the photo's but the camera is too fast to catch the bubles. It does get very agitated with large bubble action. I know it's one of those things you just have to have. EMPIRE CHAVEL ~ Mahogany Dressing Mirror ~ Empire Period ~ Circa 1830- 1840 This is an Empire cheval that dates between 1830& 1840. It is mahogany and has side knobs which control the angle of tilt one wants it to adjust to. It has the original finish and would be lit up by means of two candles which adjust on brass arms. One candle cup is missing but there's always the possibility of adapting another if found as the arm is threaded and it would simply screw in) Piece measures 65" high x 36" wide from knob to knob and the glass measures 23" x 43" The original glass has some haze and spotting when one looks closely but presents well and certainly doesn't detract from a piece that is over 180+ years old. There is an age crack on base between columns(see photo of base) Listed price is half what this would sell ... morefor in an antiques shop. We purchased this in Hadley. MA back in 1987 and brought it home in our car. It does dis-assemble so that the columns come off, the mirror is by itself, and the base is one piece. It would need to be picked up here(central PA just 15 minutes from route 80) as it wouldn't be easily shipped. On the reverse is a commemorative to the Heroes of the 1830 Revolution, which saw the last Bourbon King Charles X abdicating. This medal was made in 1840, during the reign of King Louis Philippe, from the Orleans dynasty. 3. ENGRAVER: Emile Rogat(1770-1858) was quite a respected French engraver during the Restoration ... moreperiod& into the 2nd Rep. He created 3 Napoleon-related. He also created 3 different effigies of Napoleon(Empereur et Roi” + one as“Napoleon Bonaparte” + one as“Napoleon Empereur” Rogat was also in demand by foreign royalty to create their medals(e.g. Mehemet Ali à Nessib, Honoré V of Monaco) as well as Louis-Philippe I.
