The map covers the lands of the Germanic peoples prior to the fall of the Roman empire. At the time Germania was a name given to the lands between the Alps and the Baltic Sea. The region was inhabited by mainly by Germanic, but also Celtic, Baltic, Scythian, proto-Slavic peoples. Caesar Augustus described the Germanic tribesmen north of the Roman empire as extremely savage and a threat to Roman Gaul to be conquered. His Roman Legions, led by generals Germanicus and Tiberius, conquered Germania Magna to the River elbe, and occupied it until the Romans were defeated at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, in 9AD. The Romans withdrew, establishing the Rhine and the Danube Rivers as Germanic boundary of the Roman empire. Tacitus wrote in Germania in 98 BCe: they affirm Germania to be a recent word, lately bestowed. For those who first passed the Rhine and expulsed the Gauls, and are now named Tungrians, were then called Germani. And thus by degrees the name of a tribe prevailed, not that of the nation; so that by an appellation at first occasioned by fear and conquest, they afterwards chose to be distinguished, and assuming a name lately invented were universally called Germani. From the"Hale Estate. Marietta, Ohio. The armoire was built into the home on the banks of the Ohio& Muskingum Rivers, in the 1830s. The Hale home was on the Marietta Historical Registry as a way-station for the"Underground Railway, shelter for escaped slaves en-route to Canada, prior to and during the Civil War) Shortly after World War II, about 1947 the city condemned the home to make room for a major highway. Armoires were often built into homes as a small clothes closet. When the home was being torn down, the Hale family removed the 84x42x17 closet and took it to Newport, Ohio, 35 miles north for Grandma Hale's use in her small bed-room in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catey, and family. In 1980. Phyllis Huston, a foster child of the Catey's, was visiting the old home and made an inquiry about the"closet, as ... moreit no longer was in the home. The current renters told her they had put it in the back storage building and would be disposing of it. Phyllis(Lil" and her husband, Bob, took the armoire to their home in California, and restored it to it's original status. This is a lady with a watering urn to water her beautiful flowers that are on the bridal basket as well. The glass part is in terrific condition no cracks or chips on it. It looks like part going up around the glass bowl one of the arms looks like it's a little more rough texture. Maybe had been soldered before not sure but very sturdy.The pedestal itself isn't perfectly straight has a slight tilt to it.This does need silver cleaning. An exceptional 3Gal. Salt-Glazed Ovoid Jug with a cobalt-washed stamp that reads: S. PURDY. This is the mark of Ohio potter. Solomon Purdy(originally from Vermont) This piece was most-likely made during his time in Zoar, a small German community in Tuscarawas County, between 1820-1850. A sturdy, well-made Ovoid with excellent proportion; and quite heavy at almost 14 lbs! There is minor discoloration near the base, and a small chip on the lower portion of the tooled rim(front) otherwise mint. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Antique Spinet Desk either 1830's or 1920's
Gorgeous spinnet desk. Appears to be either as early as the 1830's or as late as the 1920's. The legs, very ornate, actually crew into the base(which is why I suspect it could be from the 1830's period or earlier, however they did also make these with screw in legs in the 20's but the legs were simpler and less ornate) It had been carefully stripped when I bought it and I stained it with a light colored stain but it has not been finished any further. The top opens, the drawer opens, and the are two drawers on either side inside the base that open in addition to cubbies and an upper, small drawer inside the base as well. This is a beautiful large silver teapot made in the reign of King William IV by Edward. Edward, John and Walter Barnard(The Barnard Brothers) in London in 1830. The teapot is of very fine quality and is of melon shape with bands of fluting running from the final and down the sides of the teapot. The teapot has a squat urn finial above a domed lid. The teapot has a lovely fluted spout to the front and scroll handle with thumbpiece and insulators to the back. It stands on four feet with chased shell leaf decoration. The teapot is 11-1/2 inches/ 298 mm wide from the spout to the back of the handle. 7 inches/ 178 mm in diametre and it stands 5-1/2 inches/ 140 mm high. Offered for your bidding is an exceptionally high-quality Georgian cut glass footed sweetmeat dish(presumably Anglo-Irish) Circa 1790- 1820. A wonderful addition to even the most discerning& well-appointed tables! This substantial bowl of navette form feaures an elegant neo-classical design, with the rare& desirable square foot. The middle band is decorated with wheel cut engraving, depicting scrolls and foliage, with a running deer on one side, and a stag in repose on the other. The upper band features straight cuts, while the band under the engraved decoration features diamond point cuts. The stem is flat-faceted, tapering into the thick square foot. The bottom of the foot is cut in a grid patterns with very fine grid cuts to each larger square. Condition: No chips, cracks, or signs of restoration anywhere.
