Warring States Period. The style of pot, the intricate impressing, and the grey clay color suggest it might be of Chou origin. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. In more ancient times, more often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. Later more sophisticated techniques such as this vessel saw wood blocks used to impress the design into the vessel. If you look closely at this vessel, you can see that indeed a wood block was used to impress the same design over and over again into the wet clay. You can see in many instance where the alignment of one block was not quite square with the next, some overlapping, others with a clear boundary between the impression blocks. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. You can also see that two(non-functional) handles” were added to the vessel, likewise made from grey clay, and attached to the bowl while both were still wet. What

ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Han Dynasty(206 B.C. to 220 A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 175 millimeters(7 inches) Breadth: 195 millimeters(7 3/4 inches) Depth: 139 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) Diameter: 92 millimeters(3 2/3 inches) at top lip; 85* 73 millimeters(3 3/8* 2 7/8 inches) at base. CONDITION: Exceptionally good! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps. Chips, and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial since ancient times. All quite normal for a 2,000 year old vase. DETAIL: A splendid. Exceptionally well preserved large sized earthenware jar from the Han Dynasty of Ancient China. The jar is the size of a large melon(like a cantaloupe) What’s really remarkable is that it is ostensibly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings, chips and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are as well the normal blemishes(bumps and pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is quite possible that this specimen is much older. It’s also equally likely that this piece is a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other cera

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 LARGE ANTIQUE CHINESE NEOLITHIC POTTERY JAR WITH HANDLES This is a large antique Chinese Neolithic ... moreterra cotta pot measuring over 16 inches tall and 15 inches wide with two handles. The body of the pot is in generally good condition thought there are some flakes of missing paint. A few what might be called minor dings, and there is a white area which might be part of the original design. Also, there are a few very tight and very short cracks at the lip along with a couple of very small chips at the lip. There are also some"indentations" on the underside of the base. Fortunately, this pot does not seem to have ever been restored or repaired and, all in all, I believe this pot seems to be in very good condition for its age. I am happy to have owned it, but, unfortunately, I must sell it. I welcome your offers. PLEASE EMAIL ANY QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING. ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Sui-Tang Dynasty Painted Clay Statuette of a Matronly Lady. CLASSIFICATION: Painted Pottery Statuette. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Sui-Tang Dynasty, 7th Century A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 156 millimeters(6 1/4 inches) Breadth: 62 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) Depth: 47 millimeters(1 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very Good. Almost all of the paint has oxidized/decomposed except for the black of the hair. And traces of red on the robe’s sash. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any funerary item which is 1,400 years old. Some encrusted dirt which could be gently brushed away with a toothbrush. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation. Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. Probably the depiction of a matronly woman of high birth. She is depicted in both a formal pose and wearing formal clothes. Once painted in white, black and red, there still remains traces of a thick layer of amount of paint remaining, though it is clear that most of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. Though most of the original black paint coloring the hair remains visible beneath the layer of soil deposition, very little else remains except for a faint trace of red along the robe’s sash. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. The pottery and porcelain figures produced from the Tang all the way through the Ming Dynasties are famous even until today for their beautiful multicolored glazes and paints occurring on both mortuary pieces for funerary use as well as on utilitarian pie
