Here is a bit of history about"Hatch Tables"Liberty hatch covers are the last true wooden hatch covers that were made specifically for the World War II Liberty ships, which were built to be used as workhorses during the war. Only 2710 ships were built to serve this purpose. The wooden hatch doors covered the cargo holds of war material that was shipped between Europe and the Far East. Interestingly enough, they were fighting cargo ships and were instrumental in transporting troops and supplying our troops during this time. The term"Batten Down the Hatches" signified the procedure that was used when a long sheet of thick waterproof canvas was stretched tightly across the open cargo hold. Wooden hatch covers were then placed tightly side by side across the top of the canvas and"batten" which is a long heavy pole made of wood or steel, was laid across the tops of the hatch covers. Each end of the"batten" was tightly secured to prevent it from releasing the hatch covers. This process is what prevented heavy seas from gaining entry into the cargo holds and sinking the ship. Years ago. It became popular to salvage these hatch covers that had become ruggedly unique from weathering seas. Many hatch doors were made into tables, as they were the perfect size to use without having to cut the hatch apart. Most of the hatch doors, including this one, were composed of 2 1/2" thick pine board and were topped with metal(usually zinc-based or galvanized steel) strappings in circular cut-outs on each end of the hatch door and riveted in place, and has a metal bar design that was for lifting the hatch from the deck.
