It is in very good condition and the wood has a wonderful old patina to it. The lock does not work as far as I know, but because there is no key I didn't want to lock it. It is possible to find a key for this style of lock. It would look wonderful on top of another trunk or a stack of trunks. this is a piece I had to talk myself out of keeping. The hinges are all working however need to be cleaned. The locks appear in very good condition. No keys. These trunks were the very best. Right at the top with Louis Vuitton, Goyard, M. M. Secor, etc. This trunk was one of Hartmann's top models of the time, costing close to $200.that's over $2500 in today's market. Only a well-to-do gentleman or lady would have owned something this expensive and of this quality. This particular trunk is a cushion-top model, and is also gibraltarized, patentened process in order to make the trunk frame very strong. This is all steel-frame construction. The trunk features a velvet cushioned top to protect clothing during travel. All original"unbreakable hangers" a garment bag for clothing worn, all hand riveted, and featered a patented locking mechanism that actually hooks so your trunk would never open in travel. This one is the oldest& the smallest of the three. It appears to be pre 1940's. It has the initals K.C. hand painted on each end by Louis Vuitton. Bought from John Wanamaker Department Store in New York. The serial number is 793314. It has a Hotel Savoia Majestic. Genova, Italy label on the left side& part of a Cunard White label on the lid. The main latch catch has: 149 New Bond St. London on the left side& 70 Champs Elysess on the right side. It measures aprox 27 3/4" L X 8 3/4" H X 17 1/4" W. There are some scratches& wear but all in all very good shape for it's age. After all it was used as luggage on cruise ships& hotels. We visited the Louis ... moreVuitton Shop at Lenox Mall in Atlanta. Ga. was informed that Louis Vuitton can replace the missing handle. It does have the tray. There is some staining inside& pieces of tape on the lid. 2. The middle size was purchased at Marshall Fields. Pre 1950's? It has EPW handpainted on each end. The serial# is 793347. This one also has 149 New Bond St. London on the left side& 70 Champs Elysess on the right side of the main latch catch. It measures 29 3/4 L X 8 1/2" H X 18 1/8" W. There are also pieces of tape on the inside lid. There is some age related wear& scratches. It used as luggage on cruises& hotels& has some staining inside. It does have the tray. 3. The largest& newest of the three. It also has EPW handpainted on each end. The serial# is 907716. The handle has some wear. But the trunk itself has very little. The inside has little or no wear at all. Looks new. I checked at the LV store in Atlanta& found the same size bag listed for over $7.800.00. Not sure of the age maybe the 70's or 80's. During this period. The Europeans were in the vanguard of innovation with wood. These trunks are made with birch plywood that has been steamed and bent in a mold to form the curved edges. The high ribbed hard wood slats are unique to European trunks and are also made with the steaming and bending process. This trunk is covered with a heavy canvas that has been painted to look like embossed leather. Interiors are CLEAN and retain the original mottled colored paper. Lots of charm and character.
