Front and both sides are elaborated hand painted with floral motifs. T he lock is period to the time. As would be the nails and wooden pegs used. No key for the lock though. The trunk is solidly built with the hand forged metal plates reinforc ing sides and top. Inside is relatively clean- no major issues- wood work has stood test of times. A few scuff marks here and there. As would be normal for a trunk of this age. Also of interest is remnant of a label on one side that spells out'Milwaukee- Ontario Huron. Please examine pics carefully and ask questions. Measures about 11-1/2" x 5-3/4" x 3-1/2" PLUS 3/4" ROUND LEGS = 4-1/4" tall. Still seems strong/sturdy and lid opens/closes with ease. The ship design on top is raised a bit and black. I would think it was burned on. But it is not depressed into the wood. THIS AMAZING VICTORIAN-ERA SALESMAN SAMPLE WAS DISCOVERED IN A LOCAL ESTATE. IT IS- BY ALL ACCOUNTS- A COMPLETE PERIOD EMBOSSED-TIN DOME STEAMER TRUNK. HOWEVER. IT IS FAR MORE THAN THAT. It represents an era long lost, and is both a piece of americana and a scarce early advertising/ display piece. It dates to the 1870s-1880s, and was made to scale, featuring every detail of a full-scale steamer trunk in a more compact package. A travelling salesman couldn't possibly drag a full-scale trunk from house-call to house-call, so a VERY SMALL NUMBER of these pieces were manufactured. They allowed the salesman to showcase the many features of the steamer trunk, and were constructed in the same fashion, using the same materials. A salesman sampler such as this was a far more effective bargaining tool than a pamphlet full of 2-dimensional photographs. ... moreIt allowed the customer to pick up and inspect the trunk, lift the lid, and get a better feel of what the full-sized trunk had to offer. it was meant to be taken on the road, and samplers were put through far more wear than the actual trunks they helped sell. VERY FEW STILL EXIST. One salesman sample was given to the salesman, and was shown and stored hundreds of times- selling hundreds of trunks- until it was too road-weary to showcase and retired/ thrown away. this particular example is in amazing condition considering age and usage. It has all of the inserts. Which still have bright colors and original lithography, as well as interior leather pulls. The original lining is complete and well preserved. The trunk has retained the entire outer, embossed-tin skin[a basket-weave pattern] and every wooden strap is present. The tin panels are free of rust or jags[curling/ sharp points] The top/ lid opens and closes smoothly, and the original hinges operate as they did 140-150 years ago. Up for auction is a refinished antique doll trunk or salesman sample chest. This little trunk measures 15inches long by 8 inches deep and 8 inches high. There was no tray with this trunk when found but one was built for it out of oak and poplar. The trunk itself is made from pine and is metal bound. All the metal has been hand burnished but enough of the patina has been left to preserve the antique character of the piece. The lock is an Eagle lock and the latches function but are no longer spring loaded. The trunk has been refinished in a golden oak stain with multiple coats of sealer both inside and out. The original covering has been left on the underside to give a sense of the original look. The trunk is in overall good shape but because it is over 100 yrs old there are dings. Old Wood Chest Box Handmade Primitive- Small Child's Doll Chest. Old Salesman Sample, Old Dowry Gift, Old Toy Box All wood with metal hinges and chain hardward. Obviously handmade- looks to me old wood dark stained shellac finish- looks like small version of an old cedar chest. Nice grain patterns! Top Inside has an inside piece that fits nicely pretty snuggly below top edge to provide a better seal when closed. Edges are simply finished rounded. Triangular cut pieces stack with metal stud make up dimensional feet design. Well-made and sturdy. As common with an older handmade piece. Does rock slightly when placed on flat counter, so not completely level, but hardly noticeable. Older hardware darkened with age. Looks like brass hinges with screws. We don't know if this piece was restored at some point, but everything does look like ... moreit originally belonged with this piece. We are not sure of the origin of this piece. It is not marked and appears to be uniquely handmade. It came from the estate of an old doll collector who used it for her doll displays and storage. We were told this was probably made at least c. 1940's/50's. But since there are no markings, we can't be sure of precise age. It comes as pictured as we found it. Up for this no reserve listing is an antique doll truck. Or ladies accessory. I'd guess this piece dating from mid to late 1800s. It measures 12" height, 14" wide, and 9"deep. It's covering is leather with a fish scale diamond pattern, and accented with tin or copper embossing on the front and lid. There is also a metal handle on each side and a lockable clasp(lock not included) on the front. All the hardware, including the hinges, is in excellent shape with great patina. The tin accents are peeling off in the corners. There are nicks to the corners and edges, and done wood damage around the clasp(see photos) The lining is in excellent shape! Here is a fabulous 1800s"leather" Salesman sample(or doll) trunk in marvelous condition considering it is well over 100 years old. As the pictures show. It measures 18" wide X 11" tall X 11" deep and weighs 10 lbs. It is squeaky clean wood construction inside and out and has been cherished in our smokefree, petfree household for nearly 20 years. Look closely at the many pictures as they are more descriptive than words could tell. Note the manufacturer’s(Pettibone Mfg. Co- Cincinnati, Ohio) advertisement affixed inside. According to internet research the Pettibone Mfg. Antique 1920s Excelsior Salesman Sample Steamer Trunk Miniature Doll Trunk Measurements: Trunk 12" Length 8 1/4" Height 8 1/4" Width Tray 10 3/4" Length 7" Width 2" Height 5 pounds 13 ounces Good antique condition. My client's uncle purchased this trunk for my client when she was a child ill in hospital in the 1920s. The trunk is constructed from wood. Covered with a dark green heavy weight brocade pattern cloth on the outside and green and blue floral design paper on the interior. There are a few scratches and small areas of wear on the outside covering; around some of the metal hardware. The bottom, which has wear spots of less than 1/8" diameter, and one line, less than 1/8" W x 1/2" L, on the lid. A few of these wear areas reveal a cloth weave under the dark green surface. The lid and body ... moreof the trunk have metal banding. Corners and hasps and lock which are attached with metal round head rivets. Metal has age patina. Some rust where finish has worn with surface scratches and surface rub wear. It looks like the metal hardware on the corners and the locks once had a brass finish which shows sporadically across the different metal parts. The bottom metal banding had a black finish once upon a time. All of the banding may have been black. There is no key for the trunk. The outside paper is in good condition with minor scuffing. The interior floral paper has crayon markings on the lid and bottom. There is some missing paper on the interior lid and on trunk's interior sides along the top edges. The insert tray has one intentionally slanted side. The tray is lined with the matching paper and there is missing paper on the corners and along the top rim edge. The tray paper has some stain with powdery residue. The interior lid stop leather strap is broken. Metal central lock device is stamped: USA EXCELSIOR STAMFORD. For your consideration is a small flat top miniature steamer salesman sample/doll trunk. This beautiful little trunk measures 9" x 5" X 5" It has been completely refinished to it's original look. This is a wood trunk with full metal covering. The trunk's exterior was cleaned. Painted and sealed. Hardware was cleaned and painted aged brass. It does not have a key. The interior was stripped of it's original paper then sanded. Stained and sealed. Added were new leather side handles, lithograph and new tray. This is a fabulous Antique 1800's Salesman's Sample Wooden Trunk with an alligator embossed gold painted front and brown painted dome top. The sides and back are floral embossed and the sides are green while the back is white. It has black painted metal strips. Hinges, and metal lock( Lock does not lock) There are wooden strips on the top, front, and sides. The bottom is plain wood. The interior is paper lined. It measures 16" wide and 9" tall in the front and back while the sides due to the dome, are 10.5" tall in the center and 9" wide. The handles on the sides have been broken off. It is in really great condition for being over 100 years old( hope I look so good! It has age and desirable patina! Shipping includes insurance.

This is a sweet little Antique Victorian Doll Trunk or Miniature Salesman Sample Trunk. It is constructed of wood and has a slight domed lid. The inside tray lifts out. It looks to have been originally covered in a stenciled wallpaper but that is mostly missing from the outside. It still remains on the inside of the lid which also has a picture of a Victorian girl. There is a small amount left in other areas. The trunk measures 12" x 7 1/2" x 7" The lid has a crack across it which is shown in photos. Lid is also washed in a deep red. The side handles are missing. Very sweet little primitive trunk! Perfect doll trunk. Perfect little treasure chest. Perfect primitive piece to add to your décor.

Early Trunk Dolls or Salesman's Sample Super Piece
Antique doll trunk of maybe a salesman's sample has printed paper graphics over wood. The domed top has wooden stays held with fancy tin fixtures. There are 2 compartments under the lid and the base of the trunk has a lift out till with another 2 compartments. The leather straps to pick up the trunk are broken(aren't they all? The paper covering is in amazing condition for this turn of the century piece. Paper is 99% intact. The trunk measures 10 1/2 inches high x 14 across the front and back x 8 1/4 width. Rare find in this size. Age and condition. It has been well cared for all of these many decades.

Robert Burr 1800's Anitque Salesman Sample Trunk, Or Document Box
For your consideration is this exceptional Robert Burr salesman sample or document box. This appears to be a very rare example. And I believe few have survived to this day. Especially in this condition. Robert Burr was a very important and prolific trunk maker based in Boston, Massachusetts during the 1800's. In my research I found that his shop was initially located at# 3 Hanover street, in Boston's North End. Also the neighborhood of Paul Revere} I can imagine that some of his customers were part of the elite Bostonians of the time. Around 1850 the shop moved to Tremont Street in Boston. Mr. Burr died in 1855 and the shop was taken over by G. Roulstone, and he created his own label. This would mean this piece is a pre-1855 example. It has the original Robert Burr label still attached inside the lid. See photo} It measures 14"L ... morex 8 3/4"W x 6"H. It has a wonderful patina. And rich fabric lining in incredible condition. There is a small stain on the fabric strap that is attached to the body and lid. The outside of the box is adorned with brass studs in a very appealing pattern. The lock and latch are intact. The latch works but the key is missing. There are some dings associated with use, as well as a few stains. The bottom is a little stained and there is some peeling. PLEASE NOTE: Most of the pictures were taken inside with artificial lighting. They do make the wood appear somewhat lighter than it is. But they also reveal the signs of use with more detail. The best picture. Taken without flash or additional lighting} is the first one of it laying on a beige carpet. I am not an antique expert but try to describe my listings with detail. Antique 1880s Salesman Sample Railroad/Steamer Trunk
Nice antique miniature steamer trunk in what appears to be good condition except that the top is only connected to the bottom by the strap on inside. The paper appears to be torn in many places and has some missing in spots. The trunk doesn't appear to have had a tray. There doesn't seem to be any runners for a tray to sit on nor does it appear that they are missing. There is no key to the trunk. Trunk is approx. 10" wide by 7 1/2" tall by 7" deep. This is an estate sale find and is being sold in"AS IS AS FOUND" condition. I am NOT an expert and description is to the best of my knowledge. We have this old large Hat Trunk fresh out of a Detroit Michigan Woodlawn Estate to offer in as found condition. This was a trunk for a traveling hat sales person. The hat boxes slide inside and you can carry several hats in one case. The trunk is 36 1/2" in total height and is a oval shape measuring 14" one way and 16" the other way. It has great litho paper both inside and out, with wood and metal straps, leather handles, a leather strap with buckles to secure the top, and inside removable tray. It's a great little size measuring about 12 1/4" wide, 9 1/4" tall, and 7 3/4" deep. As you can see from the photos this trunk is in original condition. With no repairs made to it. Lovely Antique,Primitive Salesman Sample Trunk Or Child's Trunk Late 1800's
I have up for sale today a lovely old trunk. I do not know if it is a salesman sample or a child's trunk. It measures 14 inches across. 8 1/2 inches deep and 10 inches tall at the highest point. It is estimated that this trunk was made in the late 1800's or early 1900's. It's condition is pretty good considering it's age. The original leather handles,usually missing in a trunk so old, is still intact. The interior appears to be all original. Still containing the original tray, something that does not usually survive. Stamped on the tray is"S.A.MAXWELL& Co 2595. I do not have a clue what this means. The hinges are original to the chest. The lock,while missing the snap, has the original key. Probably the best feature of this chest is the lovely old primitive robin egg blue color. It is reminiscent of a day gone ... moreby. Your mind imagines where this chest has been, the hands that handled it and oh, the silent stories it holds. It is hard to describe the condition of this little trunk. The pictures really do not do it justice. The worn wood slats. The patina of the paint, the waves of the metal all contribute to the charm. Please note,as I said before, the lock does not work, even though it has it's original key. I will leave the repair of that to the new owner. Also, I have not cleaned it up, this is the condition it was in when it came out of the attic. I have not set a reserve on this trunk. This is a very cool small 1/4 size steamer or travel trunk. Victorian era. The Trunk is wood trimmed(top and bottom) with metal riveted strips and a single keyed locking mechanism. NO KEY) I am not sure if this is a salesman sample or rather a box for toting elixirs, perfumes or other sweet waters etc. There are two small compartments with straps and you can see what looks like a ring from the bottom of the bottle that sat inside. It also sort of smells like perfume or something fragrant. I believe the paper is the original paper on the inside of the trunk. It has a beautiful lithograph of a woman on the inside of the lid and reads THE MC LILLEY& CO FOR THE SALE OF MILITARY AND SOCIETY GOODS COLUMBUS OHIO. This company was associated with Freemasons, Odd Fellows and other fraternity organizations, etc. so this could have been one of their ... moresales boxes. The original leather strap that was on the top is included however the leather loops broke off the top. the side is stenciled with red and says J.L. Colwell O'Neill, NEB. There were no other markings that I could find. Its really in remarkable shape with the usual wear, fading and rusting to the metal. It has GREAT patina. Measurements are 18x10.5x11 inches. It has a lift out tray that features a compartment with a domed lid. The bottom of the tray is made of canvas and is coming loose. It was repaired at some point but needs more work. There is a vintage sticker inside the lid that describes the trunk and has the makers’ name. The lid does not have hinges. I’m not sure if it ever had them. The handles on the side are missing. Price slashed!! Small hump back trunk, salesman sample? great condition!
This trunk was purchased in an antique store by my little aunt who died in 2000. She had it for many years and used it as her jewelry box. It is in good condition. I cannot find a marking to tell who made it. But is is very well made. It is 16" wide, 10" deep and 11" high. Everything seems to be intact and I am pretty sure it was a salesmans sample. I think it is too well made to have been a doll trunk. The shipping fee includes insurance. Thank you for looking!

Very rare original wood salesmans sample immigrant trunk or doll child's trunk possibly from 1800's or very early 1900's. it is complete with the inside trays as shown. You're bidding on a nice old well built trunk in unusual color of green and black. I really believe this is a salesman sample. It's 10" x 6" x 4" hgt. It's metal clad wood with interesting paper lining. The lock is made by Eaglelock co. Of Terryville conn. Lock and latches work and key locks it. One leather handle is missing the other is broke. UP FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IS A REALLY UNIQUE TRAVELING SALESMAN'S SAMPLE CASE ESTIMATED TO BE FROM THE 1930'S. IT IS MADE FROM SOME SORT OF STIFF LINOLEUM MATERIAL. THE CORNERS ARE PROTECTED BY RIVETED METAL GUARDS. RIVETS ALSO CONNECT THE SIDES AND TOP. TWO CANVAS STRAPS ENCIRCLE THE CASE AND ARE PERMANENTLY ATTACHED ON THE BOTTOM BY LEATHER PIECES. A NICE LEATHER HANDLE IS LOCATED ON THE TOP. THERE ARE AGE APPROPRIATE SCUFFS. SCRATCHES AND POSSIBLE WATER MARKS ON THE CASE.WHICH ADD LOTS OF CHARACTER.
