I am not sure about the age either,but as I researched ... moreand compared it to the other listings, I believe it is from the 1940's or earlier. The leather straps are broken, and they are almost entirely gone, but the hinges and latches are still attached.There is no key. Some of the metals are also present, but rusted. There is no tray inside. It seems that it used to be covered with canvas, but it is faded and almost entirely gone. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful rustic piece that can be a coffee table in its present, original state or when its restored. Great for a steam punk style project. This steam trunk in original, unrestored condition is 22 1/2 inches in height, 21 inches in width, and 36 inches in length. You are also welcome to view my other unique listings. Painted navy blue on the outside. It features wrap around decorative brass hardware on the top and bottom edges of the trunk itself and on the four corners of the top, please refer to photos for detail. There are two wide decorative brass bands running up the front of the trunk and the lid, across the top of the lid, and down the back of the trunk, all held in place with tiny brass nails. The lid is hinged in the back, all hardware is brass. The front lid features two brass tabs which fold down onto the locking pins. Going through the locking pins are a pair of Japanese locks, very rare nowadays, but popular on storage trunks in the 1920's and 30's. The locks themselves are solid brass, a collector's item in themselves- we have chosen to offer them with the trunk, as they came to us at auction with the trunk. The key is included, will be in a separate envelope on the outside of the trunk. There are two side handles mounted on brass circles, please see photo. The inside is roomy, unpainted wood, no tray, in very good shape. This would make a wonderful storage chest for quilts and blankets, kept at the foot of a bed. This is a beautiful wooden slate trunk. It was made with wood. Leather, and metal trunk. Someone tried to paint the inside of the trunk over the years but the outside was left untouched. For your consideration is this primitive antique wood Child's or Doll Trunk. Rounded top. The inside is covered with litho paper designs, very nice, with compartments. Unfortunately, some previous owner covered the outside with thick gold gilt paint, peeling off. Other flaws include: the leather straps are dry and split in two, appears to be missing hinges in the back. I think the wood is walnut, not positive. The trunk is hollow and the color of the wood its so nice i been to petco and i have never seen anything this great looking. I took several pictures so you can jugde for your self. I dont know what king of wood is it. Im no expert. but i know any reptile will feel right at home with this piece. Picked up on the desert area of San Quintin Baja. Just add a nice color sand to make a nice color contrast, your pet will be playing on his on private trunk/ cave. Sold as is the is(there is a piece of the wood that looks burn. It measures 36 inches long by 24 in ches tall with the lid closed by 20 inches deep. It features a remova ble storage tray and more linens. Beddings. And clothing can be placed underne ath for conv enient additional hu ge storage. It is a wood structure trunk and frame with smooth me tal(black) and woven pattern metal riveted overlays with beautiful beading to ta ck in metals and curved and straight gorg eousl y grained wood slat s. Here's what I stated about it s condition: Metal overlay surfaces have been repainted and restored. Some scratches and scuffs marks on beautifully grained wood slats. Leather handle missing on left side. Flip up side ... morelocking latches both flip up into locking position. But only one catches to keep it lock closed and the other is missing its catch. Center locking latching closes in position but does not lock and there is no key. Interior lining shows foxing and staining and has some t ares due to great age. But smells clean with nice scent like cedar inside. Truly a rare beauty of extra large size that has great looks and craftsmanship on evident in these earlier era pieces of exceptional beauty. This exquisite intricately carved Chinese chest comes from our personal collection. We acquired it over 20 years ago from our friends who were in the Army and Navy Intelligence community during many tours of duty in China. Items from their collection were exhibited in San Francisco. In 1929 my friend's father got this chest. He was told that it took one family one year to carve it. We were shown it over 20 years ago and thought it was beautiful- we purchased it then from my friend. There is a letter available for viewing upon request that tells this story. It has a very pretty pressed tin design mixed in with the wooden strips. It really makes a very pretty display piece and has kind of a modern industrial look about it due to the pressed tin. It would look great in a warehouse loft apartment. It is in display condition but has issues as a useable trunk. Both of the old leather side handles are missing. The large front center hinge lock works fine but I do not have a key for this trunk and don't know if the lock works. Both of the side front locks have issues but display well. There are no interior drawers. The interior shows it's age but would be great for storage. It measures as follows. Antique VICTORIAN Era Monitor Top STEAMER Trunk w/ Wood Slats CONSERVED/Restored
Beautiful Victorian Era Steamer Trunk. This trunk has been conserved or restored. Has had quite a bit of work, but the only thing that has been added& isn't original to this trunk are the leather handles. Everthing else is original to this particular trunk The trunk had 3 coats of paint that were removed from its exterior. Afterward it is was polished witha metal polish, there is still some patina, after 100 plus years it is almost impossible to remove all of that with just cloth and polish lol The paint was light green and off white. In certain places small remnants of the paint may remain. Without damaging the surface of the trunk it is very hard to totally get it all off. Also I think it adds to the already very rustic beautiful charm of the trunk. It is important to note the color variations you see in the pics on the metal ARE ... moreNOT paint. This is actually a pattern in the metal. One the end pieces I think it is patina and discoloration. But the middle piece on lower portion, and next to end pieces on top, I think it is the way the metal is made. It is very beautiful, and seems purposefully placed There is very gorgeous and unique hardware. There are little flower or star shaped medallions on top of trunk and on the front of trunk The wooden slats have been sanded stained and finished The handles were replaced with strips of 100% leather Interior of trunk was stripped of all inside paper. It has been left natural wood so new owner may leave as is. Or finish out to suit their needs best. One of the most unique things about this trunk is the locks on either end of trunk. And latch in center Normally one most I have seen. There will a latch on both ends, and a lock in center, this one is reversed! Large size 36 x 21 inches and 24 inches tall Great size for a coffee table. Tv stand, statement piece for any room, or as blanket chest or for storage very sturdy. Early 1920's Wood Blanket/Storage Trunk Chest Dovetail 33 1/2"x 22"
Came from a German family. Very nice late 1920's sturdy blanket chest, has inside cubby storage box which has a keyhole lock but no key. The chest measures 33 1/2"long x 22" high x 18 1/2" deep(front to back) Do not know the wood but has a reddish tone to it. You can see on top there is a surface crack(not all way thru) and it measures about 14" There are the normal scuffs from being old and used all these years. Looks like at some point the scratches were covered with a darker stain. There is some small chipping at the feet just in small areas. A little stain coverage is all that would need. No broken parts or hunks of missing wood. Some of the boards look like just one and not pieced together. Please ask any questions. Pick up only. EXAMPLE OF STAGECOACH/JENNY LIND With Measurements: 29"w x 13.5"h x 16 1/4"d Stagecoach Trunks Including The Jenny Lind's 1840-1875 This era of trunks saw the replacement of the leather trim with metal banding and the hide coverings replaced by things such as oil cloth. A tanned and often highly tooled or inked leather. And toward the later part of the era, paper on occasion. During this time, the size of the buttons. Often brass covered, became larger although not all trunks had them. Generally, trunks of this type were still on the smaller size to carry a few belongings for an individual person as space was limited during travel. The Jenny Lind trunk was born in this time in the early 1850's. It has a distinctive shape like no other trunk being ... moresimilar to an old keyhole or bread loaf shape(there are two variations) when viewed from the side. The style became popular in America when the famous singer Jenny Lind toured the country under contract by P.T. Barnum. Jenny Lind brought her trunk over from Europe(do not know who made the first one) and everyone here wanted one. It is a very attractive trunk with metal banding that is on occasion brass wrapped and the banding is held in place by large brass buttons. The Jenny Lind's are really a unique style of their own but I have listed then under the stagecoach trunks as that is really what they were and their general size being consistent with other trunks of this era. This auction is for the Antique Wooden Grain Painted Dome Top Chest pictured below. This is a nice very old trunk. It has hand wrought iron handles at both ends of the chest. A metal lock and metal strap hinges. It has dovetail corners and a storage compartment inside the trunk. It is in good condition but does have some rough spots. Including some bug holes, and some end boards that have dried and warped a bit on the domed lid. It has its original paint featuring grain painted designs. The chest measures about 59" long, 23.5" front to back at the top tapering to 21” at the bottom. Commonly used as a blanket trunk as camphor wood is a natural bug repellant. Brought back from china by missionary great grandparents around 1920. Chest is 37 in wide, 19 inch tall& 18 inches deep. Still has slight original scent of the camphor wood. Brass lock has makers marks. ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 1800s DOME STEAMER TRUNK CHEST WOOD 4 ORIGINAL COMPARTMENTS
We are pleased to offer this very nice. BEAUTIFUL antique VICTORIAN steamer trunk. The chest has a domed top and is wood and metal construction. It features ornate iron hardware and trim and leather side handles. This wonderful trunk has an UNTOUCHED, ORIGINAL INTERIOR. The interior is lined in decoupage fashion. It has 4 compartments that are each defined with a different decoupaged portrait. They lift up(the top compartment lid lowers) for storage but they are not the"lift out" removable type of replacement trays. They are constructed of a heavy cardboard type material and have hooked closing mechanisms. The largest compartment is the lower compartment. It is accessible by lifting the sides of the center compartment. The trunk is very nice and is very much in original condition with very little restoration. The leather handles ... moremay have been replaced at some point as they have an aged patina but are in excellent condition. The trunk has the original locks but has no key. There are two clasp closures with locks on the front with a large center lock. There are 4 small wheels on the bottom of the trunk for easy transport. They are in good working condition. The trunk has no major dents or damage. There are a few minor dings but they are not very noticeable and they do not distract from the beauty of this chest. The interior is aged and is in untouched and unrestored condition. It is quite lovely with no major rips or tears to the decorative paper lining. The trunk measures 30" wide.
