Antique Black Steamer Travel Trunk Leather Handles on Each End Front Latch NEAT!
This auction is for a vintage steamer trunk. I think this is the right wording for them. This is black, hinged lid, leather strap handles on each end. Two clasp closures on the front, the main lock is missing the bottom as you can see in the photos. The inside is papered. This is worn and discolored, it is the original. There is a wooden bar on each side where the shelf would sit, but is no longer with the trunk. Measures right at 36" wide, 21.5" deep and 24" tall. It has weight to it! Steampunk Trunk Kit Vintage Brass Plated Hardware w/Leather Handles
This trunk hardware and leather handles are from the early 1970s. The patina on the brass is from their age. The leather handles are 9 3/4" long and three ply at 5/16" thick. There are 8 corners. 20 knees, 1 Long lock w/key, 2 large rectangular draw downs, 2 handles, 4 handle clamps, 2 hinges, and 2 lid stays. This is a similar list of hardware and handles used to build the trunk in the second photo(from 1974) thought seeing the finished product with similar hardware would help. TRUNK NOT INCLUDED, this item is the HARDWARE KIT ONLY. I can draw up the plans for that one if it would help a project. I handmade the metal trim from sheet aluminum and cut the bows from 3/4" X 2 1/4" oak that I split and rounded the edges of each half on a table router, pretty easy stuff. The original bottom was coming loose from tray, and was cracked, so to make this trunk as fully functional as possible I thought it best to do it right! The inside of the trunk has been stripped clear of the inside paper. This is great b/c it gets rid of all old smells many old trunks hold it also makes the trunk free of many allergens the trunk has been left natural. The trunk fell apart from being in a damp environment but the hardware on it was saved and hopefully can be used to help fix or restore another trunk or piece of furniture. Antique Cast Iron Trunk Hardware Set of 2 ~ Steamer or storage trunk bail handles removed from an old steamer chest that was uncovered in an old barn's rafters! Each measures approx. 3-3/4" x 1-3/4" not including drop handles) and each has 5 holes for mounting hardware placement. The lower middle hole is smaller than the other 4. Sorry. The hardware is NOT included. The handles are very sturdy and the pull motion is smooth and free. Each antique plate mounted carrying handle has it's own unique character textured rust. Neither has any weak spots. However, some of the rust encrustation was lost and there are scratches in the lower corner.The back of both have what may be a paint or adhesive.
