T he lock is period to the time. As would be the nails and wooden pegs used. No key for the lock though. The trunk is solidly built with the hand forged metal plates reinforc ing sides and top. Inside is relatively clean- no major issues- wood work has stood test of times. A few scuff marks here and there. As would be normal for a trunk of this age. The graining was done circa 1860-70, but has worn nicely. You just don’t find them like this anymore. Good and sturdy and in great condition too. The top ... moreis made from three framed boards with a raised piece on top. Iron side handles and a molded base. Paint looks original or at least very old. Interior has sections for holding things in the front and stepped sides to hold boxes up. There are also strips of gathered leather attached to the top that may have been for tools and a cut-out"L" shape that may have held a carpenter's square. So it seems likely that this trunk was probably a tool chest at some point. Trunk probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Overall. This piece is in good condition, however there is obvious wear as you can see from the pictures. There also appears to be some water damage to the finish and some water stains inside the trunk lid. The H hinges and side handles both show sign of rust, but are in solid condition and sturdy. The chest stands is 18" tall and measures 34.5" long and 22" wide.
