Significance of oil lamps in major religions of the Holy Land: Judaism Lamps appear in the Torah and other Jewish sources as a symbol of“lighting” the way for the righteous. The wise, and for love and other positive values. While fire was often described as being destructive, light was given a positive spiritual meaning. The oil lamp and its light were important household items, and this may explain their symbolism. Oil lamps were used for many spiritual rituals. The oil lamp and its light also became important ritualistic articles with the further development of Jewish culture and its religion. And you shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive-oil for the light. That a lamp may be set to burn continually” Exodus 27:20“When you set the lamps. The default chain(absent contrary instructions) is gold electroplate, 24 inches. For a more authentic touch, we also have available handcrafted Greek black leather cords. CONDITION: Exceptional! Completely intact. DETAIL: A hand carved jade pendant about 2.000 years old attributable to the Han Dynasty of ancient China, about 1st century B.C. What lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise was to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Sumerians, and Babylonians; jade was to the ancient Chinese. It was the gemstone of gemstones, it’s name synonymous with“gold” in other languages. Good as gold” the golden age” such expressions would have used the word“yu” for jade, rather than the word gold. This pendant seems to have two“faces” to it. With the point(the narrow end) on the bottom it seems to be a stylized face. But with the point at the top, as it seemingly would have intended to be worn, it seems to depict two figures, back to back, sitting beneath a tree. It might be a reference to the male and female personification of“Yin and Yang” The symbolism of Yin-Yang, also known as“Tai-Chi” refers to the I-Ching concept of the cycles of life, the balance between them, sometimes equated with the cyclical relatio

CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Ancient Near Eastern Early Iron Age Iron & Bronze Sword - 900 BC
A rare Ancient Near Eastern bronze and Iron sword. Dating to approximately 900 B.C. A very rare example. Notable for the almost complete preservation of its iron blade, which is often missing or so badly corroded that it has been removed and replaced with a bronze blade. The blade itself is of triangular form and of thick section. Decorated with three converging ridges on both sides, which accentuate the length and robust feel of the weapon. The hilt is of typical form, made of bronze with discoid pommel and ridge decoration on the handle. The tang insertion of the blade is visible from the back of the hilt, entering the pommel. Perhaps in antiquity the pommel may have been capped with a limestone or lapis-lazuli ornament. Length of sword: 17 3/4 inches. Condition. Exceptional. Unrestored. Blades such as this are seldom encountered on the ... moreart market. It was common in the early-middle part of the last century, when these blades were found, for the often very badly corroded iron blades to be snapped off by unscrupulous dealers. Thus one commonly finds on the market today that these original iron blades have been swapped with"more pleasing" bronze examples from another weapon. What is most unusual about this piece is that not only has the original blade been kept, but it is in an extraordinary state of preservation. Provenance: Ex. Fench private collection. Ancient Persian Luristan Bronze Age Horse Bit - 1000 BC
A genuine ancient Persian Bronze Age horse bit. Dating to approximately 1000- 800 B.C. Luristan bronze working is renowned as being amongst the highest quality of all metalwork from the ancient world, this remarkable piece is a particularly attractive and well preserved example. The bronze horse-bit comprising a square-section bar with loop terminals. The cheek pieces cast in the form of abstracted horses. With long tails and reins depicted and having two loops at the top. A variety of cheek-pieces decorated Luristan horse-bits, and the composite creatures decorating this example are very characteristic of the region. This striking piece was produced by the expert bronze working society known to us as the Luristans. And would have originally formed part of the burial contents of an elite Persian warrior. These individuals often served as ... moremercenaries in the service of rulers in the lowlands of Mesopotamia. The bronze workers of Luristan excelled in producing horse decoration, perhaps not surprisingly in view of the fact that, as Assyrian reliefs make clear, cavalry was rapidly replacing chariotry as the main mobile force in most Near Eastern armies. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements during an age redolent with violent conflict: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" For a similar Luristan horse bit currently on display at the Bri
