There is one rim chip which was repaired by one of our conservators(visible as an unglazed spot along the rim) Normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. The Ancient Luristan Community- Bronze Artwork The term'Luristan' references artifacts made by a society of semi-nomadic people that once lived in the mountainous region of Northwest Iran. The Luristan bronzes were crafted by the earliest existence of the Median empire. The Medes were Indo-Iranian people originally from central Asia who settled in Northwest Iran in the 9th century BC and later defeated the Assyrian empire in 614 BC. Their success is short-lived and their empire which once stretched from central Iran to the Persian Gulf and Anatolia was overrun in 550 BC by the Persians. The people living in the mountains of Luristan seemed to have been fascinated by the animal kingdom. Since the bronzes depict animals, birds, fish, and insects both cast in bronze and incised on bowls and plaques. Large, and rare bronze or copper-bronze libation pouring vessel from the ancient Luristan culture of Western Persia(now Iran) circa 700 BC to 400 BC. This piece is quite impressive in size and features decoration of an applied figural handle with a sculptural lion at the top. Tail extending downward, as well as two sculptural animals, possibly sitting lambs, at the root of the spout. The handle is attached with three rivets at the bottom and one at the top. The form is full. Defined and quite beautiful, and the vessel was likely used for pouring wine or water. This is a large and rare example ... moreof Luristan metalwork- museum quality and 2.500 years old. CONDITION: Good archeologically found condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Brown, red, and green encrusted patina overall. In complete condition and sturdy, however there is a triangular hole as well as an open crack on one side of the vessel(see photos) The metal has become thinner and brittle in the area of the fore-mentioned damage. Overall wear, wear to the handle, and the bottom is slightly outwardly domed. No restoration noted. This piece does not presently have a display stand but it would be worth having one made. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States in the early 20th century. Bronzes of Luristan. It also has other types of patterning as you can see in the photos. I have not cleaned this as don't want to damage the patterns. About The Luristan Culture Lorestān bronze is a set of Early Iron Age bronze artifacts of various individual forms which have been recovered from Lorestān and Kermanshah areas in west-central Iran. They include a great number of weapons. Ornaments, tools, and ceremonial objects. The artifacts were created by a major group of Persian aboriginals known as Lurs. Lorestani Bronze objects were taken illegally to Europe via Mesopotamia and to cover up most of the items taken they called them Mesopotamian while in fact there are no similarities what so ever between the Persian Bronze objects excavated in Lorestan 1943 to 1968. Ancient Agate Bead 1000 BC Top Rare Square Bead 22mm
All my beads this week listed have been sourced in Eastern Turkey. This beads very unusual. Usual signs and natural agate banding is visible but partly milky. It's 22mm in length and 9mm in thickness. Good size rare bead. It has few cracks but mostly smoothed over trough handling and usage. Holes are again drilled from both sides and again uneven and difficult to see the other side. Hard to find real ancient beads requires great deal of traveling and patience and finances! This rare alabaster artefact is called a column idol. And it originates from the Bactrian(also called Oxus) culture which flourished throughout large areas of modern India, Iran, Pakistan and Afganistan during the Bronze Age, around 3000– 2000 B.C. Standing 8” 20cms) tall by 3.5” 9.5cms) wide. And weighing 2.8kg, this piece has the typical waisted form of a column idol, with a groove sliced through the top and bottom.
