Ancient Bactrian Steatite Monkey Seal 2200 BC- 1700 BC Central Asia- Bactria- Afghanistan ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Diameter- 1.75" 2.4 cm) Weight- 22.4 grams DESCRIPTION: Beautiful and rare circular carved stone seal depicting a relief image of a sitting monkey. With it's hands up and it's tail ending as the head of a snake. This seal originates from the ancient central Asian area known as Bactria, which corresponds roughly to the present-day county of Afghanistan. Steatite stone. Circa 2200 BC to 1700 BC. This piece is very fine and it would be hard to locate another of this museum quality. An image such as this hybrid being. An monkey and a snake, would have possibly had a meaning in Bactrian mythology of the Bronze Age: the serpent is a chthonian animal which was largely widespread in Near Eastern iconography, ... morewhile the monkey is frequently documented in many ancient cultures(China, India, Mediterranean Basin, Mesopotamia) There are other known examples of seals depicting this creature in both stone and bronze, as well as bronze cosmetic flasks with a similar motif. The reverse is not carved with a design and is plain with the exception of a small attachment knob with a hand-drilled hole. Which would have been used for a leather or hemp string. AGE: 3500 BC to 2500 BC CONDITION: Excellent intact excavated ancient condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Overall wear and smooth patina. Several small chips to the back edge(see photos) No cracks to the stone. Soil encrustation on the front and in the hand-drilled hole on the back attachment knob. HISTORY: This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States during the early 20th century. M157. Offered an early stone mortar or offering bowl made from gray schist dated from 500 to 0 B.C. of likely Bactrian origin. Bowl is in a zoomorphic form resting on four legs/columns with three sets of concentric vertical circles etched onto three faces. There are two small chips that may be a result of excavation(look like a shovel or trowel) but appear to be very old. Evidence of significant mineralization on surface as well as smoothing of areas likely handled frequently(bottom feet and inside surface of rim and edges) On the inside is an old auction label from 1985(possibly from Christies or Sotheby's Arcade) The bowl is 8 ounces. 3 1/2 inches wide and 2 inches high.
