RARE SET 8 GEORGIAN RUBY GLASS SQUARE FOOT GOBLETS/ WINE GLASSES - ca.1800-1830
Offered for your bidding is an exceptionally high-quality suite of 8 x Georgian ruby glass water goblets or wine glasses(presumably English) Circa 1800- 1830. A wonderful addition to even the most discerning& well-appointed tables! These substantial goblets are of remarkable ruby red color, and beautifully made. An elegant neo-classical design, featuring the rare square foot. The vase shaped upper portions are hand-blown, as are the tapered stems, and thick molded square'lemon-squeezer' feet. The bottom of each stem has had the prunt polished, and most feature some small evidence of their hand-crafting in the form of miniscule implosions in the glass, etc. Condition: All 8 goblets have smooth upper drinking rims, free of any chips or signes of grinding. Of the 8 glasses, at least 5 have miniscule'flea-bites' on the bottom ... morecorners of the feet, but are virtually unnoticable, and frankly to be expected from age& use. One goblet as a small rectangular flake on the bottom edge, which I have attempted to show in one of the photos, and represents the poorest of the set- however a competent glass polisher can smooth out all of the feet wth little trouble if so desired. Please review our photos to make your assessment of condition. Dimensions: 3.25" diameter rim x 5.5" tall x 2.5" square foot. A Georgian Antique Single Series Opaque Twist Spiral Gauze SSOT Wine Glass c1765
A particularly good Georgian period single series opaque twist stem wine glass. It dates to the mid 18th century around 1765 to the early reign of George III. The glass features a large bell bowl which is widely flared and or larger capacity than usual for this period. The stem is a scarce single series form and it has knops at the top and bottom which is a rare feature. The twist is a spiral gauze which is well formed and very arractive. The foot is of standard conical type and the pontil is rough snapped as you would expect for this period. The glass is the English lead variety and of good quality. Overall this is a very nice example for the collector. Stock Code: 7397 JN12-5 Height 16 cms(6.3 inches) Width 7.1 cm(2.75 inches) at rim 7.2 cm(2.8 inches) at foot Weight 208 grams(before packing) Good order with only minor wear to the bowl. ... moreThe stem has a few mineral inclusions some of which are in the top knop and there is also a visible example in the lower third of the stem. Otherwise just slight air bubble inclusions as typical for period. The bowl is particularly wide flared and large which is why it is nearly the same size as the foot in this case- there has been no re-polishing of the foot. It measures 6 7/8 inches with a 2 11/16 inch bowl and 2 ¾ inch foot. Background on English Georgian Light Baluster Glasses English Georgian light baluster stems and Newcastle light balusters are without doubt the pinnacle of elegance in English Georgian drinking glasses. The glass or metal if you prefer has a propensity to be brighter than other English lead metal drinking glasses of the same period. Some academics have argued that they may have been produced on the continent rather than in Newcastle itself. The stems themselves feature series of complex knopping structures many with both air tears and beads that enhance yet further the brilliance of the glass. Composite stems. Part airtwist and part plain or opaque twist are also found. The bowls are typically larger than other drinking glasses of the same period with predominantly bell and round funnel shapes. The structure alone would rank them amongst the greatest drinking glasses ever made. However they are also almost invariably Dutch engraved, and the engraving is of a quality that has yet to be surpassed. Armorial.Commemorative and decoratively engraved Newcastle Light Balusters are

We haven’t been able to identify the Armorial but the Lions would suggest British Royalty but the double cross would also suggest Eastern Europe… All in all a superb period example. Very finely engraved, and one of the best we have had. Background on English Georgian Pedestal Glasses Pedestal stem Georgian glasses also known as Silesian stems or panel stems are purported to have been the preferred glass stem of King George 1(1714-1727) the first of the Hanoverian Kings of England but born a German. There will be much more on this later. See Jacobite engraved glass. There are some fine examples of lead metal in the V&A with crowns and sceptres moulded onto the shoulders or quadrant of the stem. Examples are known that commemorate the coronation of George 1. Other decorations such as diamonds may also be applied to the shoulders and the foot. The metal of these glasses has a propensity to be brighter than Balusters of the same period and academics have attributed this to their production in Newcastle. Continental soda glass examples are relatively common but the quality is usually very poor indeed. Ped

Excellent dark metal showing very nice striations and tooling, this is a fine TALL early piece which sits well in the hand. Background on English ... moreGeorgian Balustroid Glasses Georgian Balustroid glasses are the stylised descendents of the balusters with more elongated and some would say elegant stems. They are lighter in weight and have a wider diversity of bowl shapes than balusters. To my eye they are amongst the most beautifully balanced glasses ever made with a simple understated elegance. You may read elsewhere that the stimulus to develop the balustroid was the glass tax introduced in 1746 by Henry Pelham’s Whig government. This is completely unrelated to the earlier“window tax” of 1696 which purely by coincidence is the year that Sir George Barclay’s Jacobite assassination attempt was made on the life of the usurper William 111 in Kew. No Stuart King would have taxed“light” and definitely not drinking. I digress. Following the introduction of the glass tax products were taxed according to their weight. The assertion that balustroids developed as a result is a fallacy. Some balustroid glasses pre-date the introduction of the glass tax by twenty years and possibly more. Pure hollow stem glasses. Not just extended tears and the engraved“No Excise“ glasses can be attributed to the Glass tax more readily and obviously.

Pair Antique 18th 19th C? English Georgian Rummer Wine Glass RARE Amazing Ring
With pleasure we are offering two Beautiful Stunning Antique Georgian Rummer/Wine Crystal Goblets. Hand assembled stunning quality. Each goblet has a drape pattern with detailed flowers finely cut along the wider top area of the bowl. The stems are a baluster style with a single knop and a single ring. The amazing quality of these goblets is the sound which they make, and how long the sound rings for, just handling them brings out a long resounding ring, truly unusual they sing to you. There is no damage on the glasses. American cut glass is generally divided into 3 periods. The first american cutters such as Hawks& Dofrflenger& Gillilanz& Niland were all had English Anglo Irish backgrounds and so there first(original) designs were all anglo Irish styling. Hawks& Dorflinger cut numerous stem patterns that were based upon or even exactly the same as the stems that flourished during the English Georgian period. Then we further researched the articles at Laurie Leigh Antiques whom shows numerous Georgian articles of which these glasses are similar in design and style. The two glass we have listed stand apart from our other American Brilliant period glass. The ring when pinged resounds for 10 to 15 seconds. Longer then our other pieces. Perhaps these are old Waterford C 1729 to 1851. Irish cut glass(Waterford in particular) reached its greatest fame from 1790 to 1825. The excise tax was imposed on Ireland in 1825, as in England, when less lead was used to save weight. Could the unusual length of the resounding ring verify that they are early Waterford, we do not know. In any case, since the articles are not signed we must leave the dating and final decision to the buyer. We use

The stem was blown and cut with a polished pontil on the base. Please ask any questions you may have before you bid. Virginia residents must pay sales tax.
