Rare 19th Century Etched Roemer Rhine Wine Glasses from France, Set of 3
For auction is a set of 3 Roemer Rhine wine glasses from an estate in the Jura region of France. The family acquired them sometime in the mid to late 1800’s. They may actually be older. When France started making glasses like these. The combination of forest potash and sand that contained iron impurities gave them their green color and was referred to as Forest Glass. The early ones. Like these, were entirely green. Over time. Wine snobs insisted the bowl should be clear to show off the color of the wine inside. France had a strong influence in the design of these glasses. Especially in the Alsace region, which is just across the Rhine from Germany. They are meant for quaffing Riesling and Gewürtztraminer. All of the current descriptions I’ve read on eBay say they are made of blown glass. But I would bet these are crystal(the bowl, not ... morethe stem) because they give a lovely ring when you tap them. But I’m not a glass expert. Speaking of lovely: The photos don’t do justice to the green color of this set. It’s quite rich without being too dark. There’s also a delicate floral design etched around the bowl. Each glass is 5-1/8 th inches tall. The bowls are 2 inches in diameter(as measured across the rim) their bases are 2.75” in diameter. Condition: Two of the glasses are in superb condition. Which is amazing considering their age. The third glass has the tiniest of little flaws: there’s a speck of a rough spot along the rim. I had to take over a dozen photographs with my Nikon D40 in order to capture it(see last photo) Okay. As the Baron de Rothschild once said” Taisez-vous et buvez! Shut up and drink! A lot of three fine gold enameled wine glasses fresh from a local home. The gold on each is in excellent condition with no wear. Included are a green glass wine with an air twist stem measuring 7.5" high and an enameled clear glass Rhine wine stem measuring 7.5" high. There is no damage to the glass on these two. The last pictured has an etched bowl with gold enamel. There are no chips or cracks. There is a small fleck of white in the glass shown in the second to last photo. There is also a very small bruise or production flaw on the edge of the foot shown in the last photo. Neither is easily noticed. Description c. 1880/81 German Student Prussian Nobelmen Roemers Signed“F Van Hauten Bonn” Bohemian Grünes Glasses Antique Prussian Nobelman Wappen“Borussian” Corp Student. Fraternity or possible affiliation, with enameled crest. There are 4 that are lighter in color and they measure 8" tall and 3 1/4" diameter of base 7.9 oz. The smaller ones are a bit darker green and they measure 7 1/2" tall x 3 1/4" diameter of base 8.5 oz. These glass roemers were all hand-decorated and signed by Frederich Van Hauten(d. 1894) in Bonn. These roemers are transparent, green, blown baluster glass and have a hollow blown stem with 5 baluster knobs and applied prunts on the first knob. They were manufactured by Grünes Glas, which was considered a superior Bohemian glasshouse. Dated: W.S. 80/81” or“1881” Which stands for the Winter Semester of 1880/1881. Each glass is signed on the inner rim of the foot“F. Van Hauten. Bonn a/l” The shared inscription on all of the glasses“s/l. G. v. Gadenstedt” The first line on all of the inscriptions appear names of Nobelmen. There is a Zirkel at the end of every inscribed line. Antique Green& Gilded Rhine Wine Glasses Presented is a fabulous set of 10 green and gilded Rhine wine glasses. These glasses date to the late 1800s or early 1900s. And are likely German or Bohemian glass, though they could also be Czech. The glasses are done in an interesting design, standing on a tall, open base that flares out at the bottom, like a trumpet. The actual drinking portion of the glass is beautifully hand gilded with a floral design. This set is in great overall condition. One glass has a chip to its base and a minor chip to its rim. Another glass has a small chip on the underside of its base. Another glass has a tiny nick to the underside of the base. The chip on the base which is pointed out in the photo is the worst ... moreone by far. The gilding is in great shape. There are no breaks. No cracks, and no repairs.
