1700's Anderson Prize Medal Award Glass Paste James Tassie Portrait Medallion
This is part of an original 1021 piece James Tassie collection that was acquired in 1967 by Colby Antiques. Edward and Mary Elizabeth Colby Co-founder of Port O' Call gift stores in Southern California) of which 81 pieces were purchased by the current owner of the collection. The auction brochure or literature is not for sale with this item. It is the type of medal which was the earliest prize medal given at Glasgow University towards the end of the 18th century. These were unofficial prizes awarded by John Anderson who was Professor of Natural Philosophy. They were soon replaced by the official University Silver Medal in the 1780s. The date 1835 is therefore surprising. The more so as Anderson died in 1796. However. He founded a new institution known as Anderson College which is now Strathclyde University. It may be that Anderson had ... morea stock of his medals and that these were used by the new college. The glass paste portrait is by the famous James Tassie. I assume HOC means this- thus. John Anderson gives this prize- and is general rather than specific to a subject. The Tassie medallion itself is in pleasing condition though the silver(mount and engraved plate are less so. This portrait medallion is signed by James Tassie. More pieces to be posted! Thanks for stopping by.
