The porcelain plaque measures 3 ½” tall and 3” wide. The oval porcelain plaque is surrounded by brown velvet. This piece came from a church rummage sale in a very affluent area outside Philadelphia. The outer frame is silver colored but antiqued with a bronze like finish over the silver. The plaque is mounted in an insert within the outer frame that is wrapped with rust colored velvet like fabric. This displays and compliments the plaque very well. I have owned the plaque for about 15 years and had never removed it from the frame until I decided to list it on eBay. At this point I removed enough of the staples holding the rear cardboard panel to the frame to remove and examine the plaque. I then returned it to the frame and replaced the staples. Ruth is wearing a white headscarf and what appears to be peasant dress. She looks to be in the process of harvesting grain and a large body of water can be seen in the distance. Up for auction is a stunning antique 5” x 3.75” hand painted porcelain plaque after. The Little Fruit-Seller- Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted 1670-1675 Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was baptized on January 1. 1618 in Seville, Spain. He became the most popular Baroque religious painter of 17-century Spain, noted for paintings like Immaculate Conception(1652) The softly modeled forms, rich colors, and broad brushwork of his later paintings were influenced by 16-century Flemish painters. Murillo was praised(and copied) throughout the Spanish empire. It is signed on back. Has a 12 M stamped into it and an old sticker. Hand painted portrait plaque depicting the classic adorable winged cherub resting on his elbow. A detail copied from the famous SISTINE MADONNA oil painting by the great Renaissance painter RAPHAEL(Raffaello Sanzio, 1483-1520) which was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1512 as an altarpiece for the Church of San Sisto. Although this cherub and his companion were initially only elements of the original overall painting. They have become important in their own right and they have inspired many copies and renditions since early Victorian times until the present day. They were originally meant to be sold as souvenirs to Victorian- era travelers as remembrances of their European“Grand Tour” experience, and they were placed into frames and boxes of all sorts as well as brooches, memorial jewelry, etc. The plaque is actually a polychrome. Or a ... morehigh quality chromo-lithograph, which has been painted over and the details and colors added by hand by a talented artist. The enamels have been so completely and expertly applied that it is difficult to see any underlying guidelines without magnification, and the image appears totally hand painted. These plaques were meant to compete with the exquisite KPM type plaques which were so high priced that they were only available to the very rich. Newly prosperous middle-class Victorians were eager to fill the walls and vitrines of their parlors with similar type wares and eagerly embraced these affordable substitutes. The piece is unsigned on the front and I haven't taken it out of its frame to see if there is any artist's signature or country of origin on the back of the plaque. This miniature most likely originates from either Germany or Italy and dates to c. 1880– 1900. It is matted in wine-colored velvet and mounted in a later antiqued gilt wood frame with hanger. The frame of this item measures two and 2 1/2 inches high by 2 1/8 inches wide and the portrait on porcelain measures approximately 1 1/2 inches high by 1 1/4 inches wide. The painting is of a young woman or young girl with a way to Vail. The painting has a light scratch under the girls left on and there is a stack of black on her cleavage, I am not certain if this is just sitting on the surface or not, otherwise the porcelain appears to be in very good condition.
