Nice size measuring, 12-1/4" Height, 5-1/2" Width, 2-1/4" Depth. I'm not familiar with the mark on the back that identifies the pottery works that produced this wonderful piece. VERY INTERESTING EARLY TERRACOTTA BUDDHA HEAD - GANDHARA - EXTREMELY RARE - L@@K
this is a very interesting piece worthy of further research. I believe it is the head of an early buddha, could turn out to be hundreds of years old, viewing and info very welcome, probably one of the rarest things ive owned. id say its probably a full size head measuring about 27cm high, 18cm across, its also very heavy weighing about 4.9kg, my opinion is that its a genuine early example, it came with some more very rare pieces that ive been listing. there is damage and cracks as expected on a piece like this, i would prefer collection due to the rarity and fragile nature of the piece. would look fantastic if you have a stand made for it, im sure it will be a very long time before you find another piece as good as this. Ancient Hellenistic terracotta Aphrodite Anadyomene or Astarte figure
Ancient Hellenistic terracotta Aphrodite Anadyomene or Astarte figure You are bidding on a magnificent Hellenistic terracotta figurine that may be Aphrodite Anadyomene or perhaps an Astarte figure from the near East. It is 6.5 inches high and 3 inches wide. It is in good condition- please look at photos to see an old crack that goes from the base up around the legs of the figure. Also two closed cracks on the back. No visible glue or signs or repair. It came with a black base and internal support. Judging from the deterioration of the internal support. I estimate that the object was put on display no later than the 1950s. gsrx_vers_450(GS 6.3b1(450)

Prehistoric Mesopotamian (Hassunan) Terracotta Head (circa 5800 B.C.E.)
Prehistoric Mesopotamian(Hassunan) Terracotta Head(circa 5800 B.C.E. This is a superb example of a prehistoric( Huss unan) terracotta head. It was originally acquired from the renown author. Antiquities dealer and expert, Alex G. Malloy. The Hassunan Culture was a Neolithic archae ol ogical culture(circa 5.800 B.C.E. that flourished in northern Mesopotamia. It was named after Tell Hassuna. Near Mosul, in Iraq. The best studied remain is the settlement of Yarim-Tepe I, excavated by a Soviet expedition between 1969 and 1975. The settlements of the tribes of the Hassunan culture measured 1 to 2 hectares in area. The closely spaced rectangular mud-brick dwellings. With many rooms(three to ten and even more) were sometimes grouped around a court. Various outbuildings were found, including buildings for drying and storing grain. Potter’s kilns ... morewere also found. The discovery of grain(wheat and barley) stone hoes, querns, pestles, scythes, and other objects attest to the existence of primitive land cultivation. Judging from the finds of animal bones, the bearers of the Hassunan culture raised cows, hogs, and goats. The discovery of copper beads and pendants, a lead bracelet, and fragments of copper ore at the settlements indicate the existence of metallurgy. The Hassunan culture is characterized by a variety of vessels, decorated with molded ornamentation, incised herringbone patterns, and painted geometric designs, as well as by clay female figurines and stone seals. Numerous burials, with inhumations chiefly of children, were also unearthed. 4th-6th CENTURY INDIA TERRACOTTA PARROT BIRD TAXILA w/ GUMP'S DOCUMENTATION
GUMP'S documentation reads: PARROT INDIA TERRA COTTA. TAXILA(PUNJAB) 4th-6th Century A.D. 62-1141 LENGTH 5-3/4” Wood Stand” The City of Taxila(Takshashila) was one of the great centers of the Asiatic world in the early centuries of this era. It was the seat of a great university and scholars from all over India came to Taxila to study everything from medicine to theology. There were numerous monasteries and thousands of monks. From the ruins many delightful terracottas have been recovered. Some animals, some human figures– all things that delighted the secular population until the city was destroyed by the invasions of the 7th-8th centuries. We agree with the description from Gump’s. This is delightfully exquisite with delicate form and classical appearance. It was very modern even by today’s designer standards. This terra cotta has been ... morekiln fired possessing few blemishes; it is in excellent condition for it’s ancient provenance. Base measures approx. 6” x 2-1/2” x 1” the parrot approx. 5-3/4” x 2” x 3” high. A perfect museum piece mounted by GUMP’S or their conservator on what appears to be 2 copper posts. Prehistoric (Hassunan Culture) Terracotta Head (circa 5800 B.C.E.)
Prehistoric(Hassunan Culture) Terracotta Head(circa 5800 B.C.E. This is a rare and very ancient example artwork produced by the Hassunan(Mesopotamian) Culture. From Wikipedia: Hassuna or Tell Hassuna is an ancient Mesopotamian site situated in what was the become ancient Assyria. By around 6000 BC people had moved into the foothills(piedmont) of northernmost Mesopotamia where there was enough rainfall to allow for"dry" agriculture in some places. These were the first farmers in northernmost Mesopotamia. They made Hassuna style pottery(cream slip with reddish paint in linear designs) Hassuna people lived in small villages or hamlets ranging from 2 to 8 acres. At Tell Hassuna. Adobe dwellings built around open central courts with fine painted pottery replace earlier levels with crude pottery. Hand axes. Sickles, grinding stones, bins, ... morebaking ovens and numerous bones of domesticated animals reflect settled agricultural life. Female figurines have been related to worship and jar burials within which food was placed related to belief in afterlife. The relationship of Hassuna pottery to that of Jericho suggests that village culture was becoming widespread. This piece was legally acquired from the renown author and antiquities dealer. Alex G. Malloy, long before embargo laws went into effect making this a rare opportunity to own such a piece. ANCIENT INDUS VALLEY TERRACOTTA BULL c 3000 BC . VOTIVE FIGURE . GLAZED
In my opinion a most interesting example of c 3000 bc INDUS VALLEY. HAND MADE POTTERY: A VERY FINE VOTIVE BULL FIGURE, WITH LARGE HORNS, TRADITIONAL"HUMP" BACK AND TAIL. This examplke has an unusual almost"salt glazed" feel, with a veined, irregular texture to the body of the bull: you will see from the pictures that the colour is a mixture of browns, red-browns. The figure obviously is an interesting reference example. I bought this from an Antiquity dealer at Bartlet Street Antiques Centre, Bath, in the late 1990's. The item is in fine reference order. Both horns have been rstored. With breaks to both, there is also a small amount of slice fritting/nibble chipping to the hump of the bull. No restoration or further damage.Combined postage offered. Height at 4.85 inches. Length is at 4.5 inches and depth at 2 inches. ... moreI will happily ship to China and Brazil. But only with the tracked signed for option. 5 Old Babylonian Terracotta Cuneiform Tablet (Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine)
5 Cuneiform tablats from olld coll. in Israel(1960-1980) 1700-2000 B.C. They were examined by Marcel Sigrist and were 100% authentic. They will send only after receiving confirmation of the sale and export of IAA. The oldest known written language. Cuneiform, first used by the ancient peoples of the Near East over 5000 years ago, is composed of a series of wedge-shaped incisions made with a sharpened reed stylus. This script was adopted by all the major civilizations of Mesopotamia for recording their distinct languages, including the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. Clay tablets were the preferred media for everyday writing because they could either be easily recycled or, if a permanent record was required, fired in a kiln and preserved. The earliest recorded inscriptions are not myths of histories, but rather banal economic ... moretransactions and accounting documents. Later, one of the most famous written works of the ancient world, Hammurabi’s code, was recorded in the cuneiform script. While these marks may appear obscure and mysterious to our eyes, scholars have made much progress in deciphering cuneiform after discovering inscriptions on the Behistun Rock, a cliff in western Iran. Much like the Rosetta Stone, the Behistun Inscription contained the same text written in three different languages(Persian, Babylonian, and Elamite) all of which utilized the cuneiform system of writing. Due to the resemblance of these languages to modern ones, scholars were able to crack to code. This terracotta tablet reveals just how intricate a system of writing cuneiform was. In the hands of a talented scribe. A remarkable amount of information could be squeezed into a relatively small space and yet still remain legible. Both the front and back of this tablet have been written on, containing a total of fourteen lines of text. Like most tablets that survive, the text relates to administrative matters. Inscribed during to the reign of Ammi-ditana, King of Babylon, this fascinating tablet is precisely dated to the
A VERY FINE PAINTED TERRACOTTA ZEBU BULL - HARAPPA
A VERY FINE PAINTED TERRACOTTA ZEBU BULL- HARAPPA Typical of the style discovered during excavations at the ancient city of Harappa. THIS IS THE REAL THING. 100% AUTHENTIC ANCIENT ITEM! The Indus Valley civilization was rediscovered in 1920-21 when engraved seals were unearthed in the Punjab province of Pakistan at a site called Harappa. A name which is often used to describe the civilization as a whole. Subsequent excavations at Harappa revealed ... morethe size and complexity of this ancient city. Other sites were unearthed as well along the banks of the Indus River, including the equally large city of Mohenjodaro. Through archaeological and historical research, we can now say for certain that a highly developed urban civilization flourished in the Indian subcontinent over five thousand years ago. Though the Indus Valley script remains undeciphered, the numerous seals, statuary, and pottery discovered during excavations, not to mention the urban ruins, have enabled scholars to construct a reasonably plausible account of the Indus Valley civilization. Some kind of centralized state. And certainly fairly extensive town planning, is suggested by the layout of the great cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. The same kind of burnt brick appears to have been used in the construction of buildings in cities that were several hundred miles apart. The weights and measures also show a very considerable regularity, suggesting that these disparate cities spread out across a vast desert shared a common culture. The Indus Valley people domesticated animals, and harvested various crops, such as cotton, sesame, peas, barley, and cotton. Indus

FORVM Eastern India Buddhist Terracotta Votive Sealing c. 8th Century AD
Eastern India. Buddhist Terracotta Votive Sealing, c. 8th Century Antiquities authenticated and attributed by Alex G. Malloy. At holy sites and temples Buddhist pilgrims would purchase small votive offerings. To present to the shrine to be interred inside a stupa, or to take home as a memento. Votive offerings varied from place to place and over time. They were often made of terracotta and included small plaques, stupas, and sealings. The various sealings texts include meaningless pseudo-writing, repeated mantras, passages from the Ramayana, the Buddhist creed, prayers, etc. Because few early Buddhist manuscripts have survived in India, the writings found on these humble sealings provide a rare glimpse of the various scripts used in India in ancient and early medieval times. http:papyri.tripod.com/buddhist/introsealings.html AB54490. cf. ... moreZwalf 1985. Elamite Terracotta & Faience Beads 1200-1000 BC Necklace Elam 40+ Inches
Elamite Terracotta Blue Faience Beads 1200-1000 BC Earth Tones Elam This is string of Elamite beads is approximately 42 inches in length and contains many of the small beads. According to the accompanying documentation from Sadigh Galleries of New York: Elamite Bead Necklace- The ancient kingdom of Elam lay in the southern provinces of present-day Iran. The Elamites. Like their great Mesopotamian neighbor to the south, were ruled by a sequence of dynasties and their culture flourished from 2,000 BC to about 650 BC when they were conquered by Assurbanipal. The people of Elam had a distinctive artistic tradition and their style can be recognized on artifacts that have been recovered. Elamite cylinder seals frequently depict daily life scenes: hunting. Weaving and playing musical instruments. Seals also serve as a source of information on personal ... moreadornment and show, for example, formal hairstyles combed forward and projecting above the brow, large turbans, bare chests and pleated long skirts worn by deities and men of distinction. Goddesses' statues were adorned with jewelry and votive statues often show a series of necklaces. Beads were a popular adornment for men and women alike and were made from a variety of materials including stone, clay, faience and bone. The terra cotta beads on this necklace are from the Elamite culture and are dated 1200-1000 BC. The earth-toned beads are made of fired clay and the blue beads are made of faience paste. These beads have been carefully restrung in a wearable necklace. The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity is included with this necklace. We are not experts in antiquities such as these and are selling for a gentleman who purchased this item a few years ago. The beads indeed look old. But beyond that, we cannot make guarantee on anything in the Certificate as issued by Sadigh.

The terracotta figurines are considered to be among the most original of Susa’s artistic expressions. In successive phases over a period of about three millennia. The inhabitants of the Susiana plain fashioned the ... moreclay they found beneath their feet into animal and human forms, first by hand and later by using molds. By the latter means they bestowed upon their figurines, a great variety of ornaments, such as elaborate earrings, diadems, necklaces(some times bearing star pendants) and anklets, and ringbone shoulder-straps, as in the present examples. These were produced outside the realm of official commissions, although some of the cast examples were made by skilled craftsman and are of very high quality. These small figures were intended for private individuals and their inspiration. Objects of this type are chiefly of interest for what they reveal about Susians’ daily preoccupations and the evolution of their mode of thought. It should be noted that a great majority of Susian figurines demonstrate a complete independence from Mesopotamian production, except in times when Susa was under Akkadian or Babylonian rule. A few examples of Susian figurines. Such as these ones, were fashioned with a great variety of ornamentation. A few appear to have made their way into private or public collections. This includes the examples excavated by Roland de Mecquenem in Susa(1897-1946) and now con

Ancient Syro Hittite Near Eastern Terracotta Fertility Goddess Idol - 2200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite goddess idol. Dating to approximately 2200- 2000 BC. Merging both animal and human elements. This primitive figure is depicted with a distinctive beaked face, elaborate headdress and deeply incised eyes. Shown naked with the exception of a necklace and tied sash around the waist, the short arms and thin legs serve to highlight the hips, which are typically broad for a fertility idol of the period. Though they have been found over a wide area, this example has been preserved in particularly fine condition, most remarkably, the original copper earrings are still in place. There is a strong sense of the supernatural about this enigmatic idol. It is at once mysterious yet familiar. The head is distinctively bird-like; yet the body, necklaces and earrings imbue it with the feel ... moreof a human figure. This fusion of characteristics has led many to conclude that these figures were intended to represent deities, possibly a goddess of motherhood. Indeed they appear to have been commonly buried beneath doorposts, possibly to ensure the fertility of the women of the household. Height: 6 ¼ inches. Condition: Exceptional. Unrestored and with some salt deposits encrusted on the surface above the nose, a reassuring sign of authenticity. Provenance: Ex. Belgian private collection. Acquired 1980’s.
