Medieval Black Rust Glazed Oil Spot Hare’s Fur Precursor Ceramic Tea Bowl 1100AD
TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Rare! Exceptionally Well Preserved Genuine Ancient Medieval“Oil Spot” Black Glazed Ceramic Tea Bowl. Perfect as a Candy or Potpourri Dish for Work or Home. CLASSIFICATION: Black-Rust Glazed Ceramic Tea Bowl(Precursor to“Oil Spot” or“Hare’s Fur” Bowls) ATTRIBUTION: In the style of Ancient China. Song Dynasty(906-1279 A.D. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 84 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) at top lip; 37 millimeters(1 1/2 inches) at base. Height: 42 millimeters(1 2/3 inches) CONDITION: Exceptionally good. Almost perfectly preserved. The normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with ... morecrude hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid petite black/brown glazed earthenware tea bowl from the Song Dynasty of Ancient China. It would make a wonderful candy or potpourri dish! This particular style was produced using a black glaze. High in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. These tea bowls are the precursor to the“oil spot” or“hare’s fur” but minus the sharply delineated spots of streaks. Instead you can see a few spots, but mostly just swirls or bands of alternating black and rust brown glaze. No doubt you can see a little spotting and a little streaking(furring” if you wish) but not enough to really claim that the tea bowls are“oil spot” or“hare’s fur” tea bowls. But certainly they are the precursor, as you can clearly make out in these photos, and are still quite rare. Both styles(oil spot” and“hare’s fur”
