TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Peoples of the Past: Babylonians ... moreby H.W.F. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. CONDITION: Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket. Including a small(1/2 inch) closed, neatly mended edge tear to the front side of the dustjacket at the spine head. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. South Arabian Limestone Female Figure / Idol - 500 BC
A rare and powerful South Arabian limestone statue of a seated female. Dating to the pre-Islamic period(circa 500-200 B.C. This figure is depicted seated on a stool. The long. Stylized arms are bent at the elbows with the forearms projecting forward; the incised fingers are clenched tightly into a fist. The facial features are highly abstracted, with a long, delicately carved nose running down from high upon the brow. The large eyes reflect a serene countenance, seemingly contrary to the rigidity of the body. There is a south Arabian inscription on the base, which retains some of the original ochre pigment. Though its true role may now be hidden from us. This mysterious piece likely has its roots in the religious traditions of pre-Islamic Arabia. Some have interpreted these artifacts as votive offerings from individuals seeking assistance ... moreor protection from the gods. Sitting at the source of a wide-ranging ancient trade network. Pre-Islamic Arabia was a patchwork of competing and warlike kingdoms. The chief source of its vast wealth derived from two of the most coveted goods in ancient times, frankincense and myrrh. These resinous gums were obtained from trees that grew only in southern Arabia and were literally worth their weight in gold in the bazaars, souks and agoras of the ancient world. In order to reach the Mediterranean market they were transported north through the desert wastes by camel, a journey that could take up to three months. Characterised by a reclusion from foreigners and visited by only the most audacious of merchants. Southern Arabia remained a virtually inaccessible and semi-mythological region throughout classical antiquity. A striking and enigmatic piece of pre-Islamic art. Condition: Excellent. A small chip to the top of the head has been restored. Traces of the original pigment remain on the base and hand. Height: 7 1/4 inches. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. London. Ex. Sothebys, London, 26th April 1996(lot 100, Colonnade sale of Antiquities, Oriental and Islamic art)

Ancient Sabean Statue Head, South Arabian, Marble, 900-100 BC, with Black Stand
Rare Ancient Sabean Statue Head with Stand South Arabian_ 100% Authentic and Ancient Here is an odd looking Sabean marble head(or maybe the Sabeans were just odd looking) Measuring 22 cm x 9 cm and with a stand that measures 8 cm x 7 cm. Note that on the reverse side(back of the head) of the rock there are several scuff marks. These would indicate many centuries of the rock laying facedown in the sandy desert. Being protected by the elements and foot traffic. The back of the head, however, was being being exposed to the elements while being walked upon by man or beast. The front side(faceside) shows virtually none of these scuff marks yet there does appear to be two letters of Sabean alphabet on the forehead of the face. Now looking at the photos one can see a crack at the base of the head and going a short way up the two sides. The crack ... morecould have been caused by the drilling of the hole in the base for the stand or the crack could have been caused simply by the exposure to extreme desert elements for centuries. Either way. The crack is stable, not growing, and nearly invisible when the head is mounted on it's stand. This head would make an excellent museum piece and these are very hard to find. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by me. The starting bid on this unique piece is only $125.00. It weighs 8 pounds which means that shipping in the US is $25 and overseas it is $60.00. I do not ship to Italy. There is more information below provided by Wikipedia. Ancient South Arabian Alabaster Head Sculpture - 600 BC
An ancient south Arabian alabaster head. Dating to around 600– 300 BC. This mysterious carving has a somewhat otherworldly quality. Similar heads are known from the ancient city of Ma’rib. Capital of the Sabaean kingdom and legendary domain of the Queen of Sheba. They appear to have been set into large limestone stela commemorating the dead. Though we cannot know the name of the man for whom this carving was produced, he must have been someone of means, perhaps one of the wealthy traders of frankincense and myrrh for which Ma’rib was so famous in antiquity. To the ancients. The kingdoms of southern Arabia lay at the very edge of the known world, seemingly cresting the boundary between myth and reality. Only the hardiest, or most foolhardy of travellers attempted to reach this exotic land beyond the great deserts. Famed for its spices, perfumes ... moreand precious woods, ancient Arabia exemplified a sense of the exotic unknown. So it is with this carving. The anonymous features tell us very little, only hinting at the story behind the object. Height of head alone: 7 ½ inches. Height mounted: 9 ¾ inches. Condition: Good. With wear and encrustations commensurate with an ancient artefact. Fixed to a bespoke mount. Provenance: Ex. European private collection. Acquired 1980's. Ancient South Arabian Limestone Pillar Stele Sculpture - 3rd Century BC
An ancient south Arabian limestone pillar stele. Dating to the 3rd– 1st century BC. The head sculpted in relief with robust features; prominent ridge. Long nose, almond-shaped hollow eyes and a terse mouth. A Sabaean inscription runs beneath, likely the name of the dedicator. A confidently carved, artistic example with a haunting quality. Cut off by great deserts to the north. South Arabia remained a virtually inaccessible and semi-mythological region throughout classical antiquity. The sculpture of the period seems to typify this sense of mystique, of the unknowable. This piece may have been a votive offering from an individual seeking assistance or protection from the gods. Height of sculpture alone: 11 ⅛ inches. Height mounted: 13 ½ inches. Condition: Very good. Fragmentary. Unrestored; please note that the gaps in the stone beneath ... morethe face mask are part of the natural shape of the stone, not modern damage.
