Ancient Persian Decorated Grey Pottery Jug 1500 B.C.
A well provenanced. Ancient, grey pottery vessel, from the Persian Empire, dating to approximately the Late 2nd to Early 1st millennium B.C. A beautifully modeled. Dark grey, burnished vessel. With stout, bulbous body, wide circular mouth, subtly footed base. Three small, pointed protrusions adorn the sides of the jug, with a fourth, larger, pierced protrusion at the back. Delicately incised zigzagged detail surrounds the mouth of the jug, while downward pointing triangular detail falls from the bottom of each protrusion. The larger protrusion probably represents a stylized quadruped. The smaller ones are likely to signify animal(bull? heads. Diameter: 3 1/2 inches. Height: 2 1/2 inches. Condition: Excellent.
