Ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic Painted Pottery Bowl - 3400 BC
A rare and extremely well provenanced ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic pottery bowl. Dating to between 3600- 3400 B.C. This expansive cream buff ware bowl has been hand modeled with steeply curved shoulders. A flattened circular base and a wide mouth featuring a subtly everted rim. The outer body of the vessel is decorated with a double lined band in dark purple, with a geometric design below, possibly depicting highly abstracted animals in motion. The inside is painted with a frieze of three stylized ibex, and further geometric designs that likely reflect contemporary basketry patterns. This motif, combined with the series of vertical lines that accompany it expertly creates the illusion of rotary motion. This bowl is characteristic of the luxury ceramics found at Tepe Sialk in Iran produced during the Chalcolthic(Copper) Age. Aside from ... moretheir technical excellence. The painted ornamentation of these vessels demonstrates a progressive visual wit that remains highly striking even today. Produced at a time of fertile creatively that is widely renowned as a golden age of ancient Near Eastern ceramics; this well provenanced piece is a rare and important vestige of ancient artistic development. For published vessels of similar types please see: Kawami. T.S. 1992. Ancient Iranian Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections. New York: Arthur M. Sackler Foundation. Antique Glazed Ceramic Pottery Bowl Persia ca 12th -13th Century Islamic Kashan
This was part of my late father-in-law's collection of antiques. He was an active collector who frequented galleries and auction houses in New York City from the 1940's to the 1970's. I have included the cover of a catalog from a 1943 Parke-Bernet Galleries as well as one page showing the various types of items that were part of his collection. I believe this piece is a Kashan bowl dating from the 12th or 13th century. But I am not an expert. It has a diameter of approximately 4 inches and a height of approximately 1.75 inches. Satisfaction is guaranteed with a 14 day return policy and shipping and insurance are free.

Ancient Indus Valley pottery from Afghanistan. Excellent condition 100% authentic no restoration. no repair no clean! The Indus Valley civilization was rediscovered in 1920-21 when engraved seals were unearthed in the Punjab province of Pakistan at a site called Harappa. A name which is often used to describe the civilization as a whole. Subsequent excavations at Harappa revealed the size and complexity of this ancient city. Other sites were unearthed as well along the banks of the Indus River, including the equally large city of Mohenjodaro. Through archaeological and historical research, we can now say for certain that a highly developed urban civilization ... moreflourished in the Indian subcontinent over five thousand years ago. Though the Indus Valley script remains undeciphered, the numerous seals, statuary, and pottery discovered during excavations, not to mention the urban ruins, have enabled scholars to construct a reasonably plausible account of the Indus Valley civilization Product: ANCIENT CUP FROM INDUS VALLEY.
