A PARTICULARLY RARE HERODIAN OIL LAMP- MASADA A richly decorated mold-made oil lamp crafted from deep-red clay or terracotta depicting geometric designs and palm branches around the shoulders. The flat base in the shape of a pointed oval is complimented by the top which has a shallow trench on the nozzle and a knob handle. BACKGROUND: Lamps were used throughout antiquity for the principal purpose of lighting in domestic. Civic and also religious contexts(funerary or votive) where permanent light was required. And this is a highly decorative example with a good amount of surface glaze remaining. Small special decorated herodian oil lamp. this lamp symbolize the period between the Hellenistic and the Roman period in the holy land The nose is typical herodian roman style but the shoulder decorated with hellenistic"sunburst" style RARE Herodian Oil Lamps. Also known as, Knife Parted Lamps, are dated between 37 BCE and 70 CE. They have a wheel made round body and the nozzle was separately made and later attached. These lamps are very seldom decorated and if there are any decorations they would be simple dots or lines appearing on the nozzle. The Herodian lamps are usually found in Judea and Jerusalem, therefore it seems they were mainly used by the Jewish population. A few were also found in the Galilee and in Transjordan.

This wonderfully shaped oil lamp originates from the Middle East. Probably in the area of Nishapur in modern day Iran, and it dates to around 800-1200 A.D. Made of stone(probably steatite. A variety of soapstone) and with a star shape it has a central well with holes leading into each arm to provide 7 individual flames. There is also a lovely piece of carved decoration on the base(see photo 4 in close-up) It is of a very typical form for these lamps– please see below for a couple of examples: Measuring 7.25” wide it is in very good condition– there are several small(sub 1cm) chips plus wear and tear to the soft stone.
