Ancient Syro Hittite Near Eastern Terracotta Fertility Goddess Idol - 2200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite goddess idol. Dating to approximately 2200- 2000 BC. Merging both animal and human elements. This primitive figure is depicted with a distinctive beaked face, elaborate headdress and deeply incised eyes. Shown naked with the exception of a necklace and tied sash around the waist, the short arms and thin legs serve to highlight the hips, which are typically broad for a fertility idol of the period. Though they have been found over a wide area, this example has been preserved in particularly fine condition, most remarkably, the original copper earrings are still in place. There is a strong sense of the supernatural about this enigmatic idol. It is at once mysterious yet familiar. The head is distinctively bird-like; yet the body, necklaces and earrings imbue it with the feel ... moreof a human figure. This fusion of characteristics has led many to conclude that these figures were intended to represent deities, possibly a goddess of motherhood. Indeed they appear to have been commonly buried beneath doorposts, possibly to ensure the fertility of the women of the household. Height: 6 ¼ inches. Condition: Exceptional. Unrestored and with some salt deposits encrusted on the surface above the nose, a reassuring sign of authenticity. Provenance: Ex. Belgian private collection. Acquired 1980s. Ancient Asian horses(Japanese. Chinese, and Korean) with rider were painted in bright colors in classical war garb of the time. The figures are 3-dimensional art and indicate the art of China. The figurines are very similar to the clay statuettes of the Neolithic people. There is evidence that a people called Asian Huns(Xiongnu) were ancestors of the Turkish tribes. I believe the figurines reflect the Cyprus(Cypriots) and Asian influence of the people of that culture and that period. Horses were prized very highly in Asian culture.
