The locket depicts Shiva on a Sacred Cow in high relief and measures approximately 2 5/8" X 1 3/4" 68mm X 44mm) The back of the locket is highly polished and possesses a mirror like finish. The locket pendant is fitted with its original large tapered pendant bail that can move from side to side. The locket is fitted with two(2) sterling silver inner brackets. One on each side. A very rare and well carved Indian red sandstone figure of a standing Buddha 8th-10th century. This unusual and well preserved figure of Buddha comes from central or north India. We have taken advice from several highly qualified experts and have been informed that the fluid style means that this carving postdates the Gandharan period by some way. It dates from the last period of Buddhist worship before the dominance of Islam. THEY APPEAR TO BE INDIAN/PERSIAN IN ORIGIN AND ARE CARVED FROM SOME SORT OF STONE OR"COAL" LIKE HARD MATERIAL- THEY ARE QUITE DENSE AND HEAVY WITH A"COLD" FEEL THERE ARE PAPER LABELS ATTACHED TO THE BACK WHICH ARE OBVIOUSLY OLD. ONE HAS SOME PEN WRITTEN DESCRIPTION BUT IMPOSSIBLE TO READ ONE DEPICTS COUPLE- HE TALLER THAN SHE. BOTH HEADS TO ONE SIDE, HE WITH ARMS FOLDED AND LEGS CROSSED, SHE WITH RIGHT HAND ALOFT AND OTHER BY HER SIDE ARCHED TOP WITH CARVED PALM LEAF DECORATION- THIS ONE STANDS JUST OVER 9cm IN HEIGHT- FLATISH BASE SO IT DOES ACTUALLY STAND THE OTHER DEPICTS WHAT LOOKS LIKE A WARRIOR ... moreWITH A LARGE CLUB IN ONE HAND.
