Ancient Luristan Fertility Goddess Pendant Figure - 1000 BC
A beautifully modeled and well preserved ancient Luristan bronze fertility pendant. Possibly depicting the goddess Ishtar, dating to between 1000- 650 B.C. This highly stylized human figure is depicted standing upright. Arms folded inwards and clutching a ritual macehead to her breast. The piece is a curious mix of abstract and realism. Her clothing accurately reflects Luristan dress customs from the period, with the long tunic(favoured by both men and women) and traditional bronze jewelry of anklets, bracelets and neck rings. A headdress of ripe pomegranates is worn along with a similar garland above the shoulders and waist, a symbol of fertility and a plentiful harvest. Though very little of is known of anicent Luristan society. It has been suggested that pendants such as these were depictions of Ishtar(or Anahita as she may have been known ... moreto the Luristans) the Mesopotamian goddess of water. Fertility and abundance. This primitive figure is depicted with a distinctive beaked face, elaborate headdress and deeply incised eyes.
