Ancient Luristan Fertility Goddess Pendant Figure - 1000 BC
A beautifully modeled and well preserved ancient Luristan bronze fertility pendant. Possibly depicting the goddess Ishtar, dating to between 1000- 650 B.C. This highly stylized human figure is depicted standing upright. Arms folded inwards and clutching a ritual macehead to her breast. The piece is a curious mix of abstract and realism. Her clothing accurately reflects Luristan dress customs from the period, with the long tunic(favoured by both men and women) and traditional bronze jewelry of anklets, bracelets and neck rings. A headdress of ripe pomegranates is worn along with a similar garland above the shoulders and waist, a symbol of fertility and a plentiful harvest. Though very little of is known of anicent Luristan society. It has been suggested that pendants such as these were depictions of Ishtar(or Anahita as she may have been known ... moreto the Luristans) the Mesopotamian goddess of water. Fertility and abundance. The loop for attachment on the rear of the piece shows it was intended to be worn, and so its dual role as both provider and protector seems plausible. The ancient inhabitants of mountainous Luristan were pastoralists and would have followed an annual cycle of migration between their warm low-lying winter pastures and the high cooler summer grazing grounds. Their production of these remarkable bronze artifacts for which ancient Luristan society is primarily known took place largely during the winter months. When the low lying valleys were packed with their tented encampments. The Assyrian king Sennacherib's account of a campaign in Luristan territory vividly illustrates how the land would have been full of these temporary settlements: And their settlements which were numberless. I destroyed, I devastated, I turned to ash. The houses of the steppe, namely their tents, wherein they dwelt, I set on fire" An enigmatic piece of ancient middle eastern metalwork. Produced by an adaptable and unique society. P.R.S. Moorey(ed. Ancient Bronzes. Ceramics and Seals. Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Mus

Ancient Syro Hittite Pottery Near Eastern Fertility Goddess Idol - 1500 BC
An ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite Goddess idol. Dating to approximately 1500- 1200 BC. This primitive human figure is depicted with bird-like features. Thickly pleated hair, deeply incised eyes and a wide mouth. These elemental features combine to produce a visually arresting appeal. This piece very likely depicts the fertility goddess Astarte. An ancient near eastern deity connected with fertility, sexuality, and war. A common theme in Syro-Hittite art, these evocative idols were produced from the 3rd millennium BC onwards and are amongst man's earliest attempts at capturing the human form, albeit in highly abstracted style. Height: 2 inches. Condition: Good. Body missing as shown, head unrestored. Provenance: Ex. French private collection. Ancient Syro Hittite Near Eastern Terracotta Fertility Goddess Idol - 2200 BC
An exceptionally well preserved ancient near eastern Syro-Hittite goddess idol. Dating to approximately 2200- 2000 BC. Merging both animal and human elements. This primitive figure is depicted with a distinctive beaked face, elaborate headdress and deeply incised eyes. Shown naked with the exception of a necklace and tied sash around the waist, the short arms and thin legs serve to highlight the hips, which are typically broad for a fertility idol of the period. Though they have been found over a wide area, this example has been preserved in particularly fine condition, most remarkably, the original copper earrings are still in place. There is a strong sense of the supernatural about this enigmatic idol. It is at once mysterious yet familiar. The head is distinctively bird-like; yet the body, necklaces and earrings imbue it with the feel ... moreof a human figure. This fusion of characteristics has led many to conclude that these figures were intended to represent deities, possibly a goddess of motherhood. Indeed they appear to have been commonly buried beneath doorposts, possibly to ensure the fertility of the women of the household. Height: 6 ¼ inches. Condition: Exceptional. Unrestored and with some salt deposits encrusted on the surface above the nose, a reassuring sign of authenticity. Provenance: Ex. Belgian private collection. Acquired 1980’s.
