An elegant. Rare and well preserved Ancient Persian Bronze Age War Hammer, dating to approximately 2500- 2000 BC. The heavy weapon. Of high copper content, is of typical Elamite form, kinked, with blunt axe head on one side, the other with bulging hammer. With oval socket and four circular perforations on the body; three near the axe edge, one over the socket for securing the original wooden pole, now perished. This war hammer may well have had a ceremonial purpose, as well as a functional use. The position of the three perforations at the rear are intriguing- possibly for attachment of decorative tassels, or to bind the weapon to a shaft running over the butt. A very unusual object. This artifact would originally have formed part of the burial contents of a wealthy Elamite Warrior's tomb. The Bronze Age Peoples of Elam. Description: Ancient Persian Near Eastern Luristan or Elamite Bronze Mace Head. 1250-650 BC(Present Day Iran) Nicely cast, the cylindrical scepter type bronze mace head with banded cylindrical base supporting a bulbous knob top with segmented bands resembling an ear of corn. The surface heavily oxidized with rich verdigris patina and tiny green crystallization visible along the interior. Dimensions: 3.1" high x 2.5" diameter. Weight: 1.49 lbs. 23.9 oz. Condition: Overall. The mace head is in fair/good condition. The surface is heavily corroded(oxidized) with small dents along the raised edges of the weapon.
