Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a gorgeous Ukhamba or ... moreritual beer vessel. From the Zulu people, South Africa. The word ukhamba is a Zulu word for a large clay vessel and the term is commonly used by all African cultures. The vessel measures 7 inches in diameter by 5 inches in height(17.7 cm by 12.7 cm) It is in very good condition and dates to the late 20th century. A fabulous collector’s item. Coming from an important mid-West collection of African art, it is guaranteed authentic and would make a fine addition to any collection of Zulu art or African art in general. In Zulu. Ukhamba consists of two words: ukukhama(which means to squeeze out or compress out as in milking a cow) + bamba(to hold in place so as to receive that which is squeezed out) The ukhamba is a vessel, a reservoir, and a protector of that which is valuable and good for physical and spiritual nourishment. It is a central piece in the rite of social fellowship and that rite itself is treated with respect and studied deference. The clay pot is made out of earth, and symbolizes the Eternal Mother and womb from which all emerge and gets buried in order for others to emerge. The clay pot gives shape to its liquid contents and this means the shaping of all human knowledge by a lived life on earth. Ukhamba pots are formed by building up coils of clay and smoothing them down with items such as the back of a spoon or a water-worn rock. The pot is put to one side until it has reached leather-hardness. When incised designs are created using found objects such as maize cobs, sharpened bicycle or umbrella spokes, combs and anything else that will create an attractive pattern. Originally, pots were mostly decorated by attaching lumps called amasumpa(warts) to stop the pot from slipping but today the most intricate designs are to be found, ranging from leaves, houses and shields to complicated geometric patterns. When ready for use the pot has to be polished

There is one rim chip which was repaired by one of our conservators(visible as an unglazed spot along the rim) Normal tiny nicks and dings, all consistent with a ceramic utensil of this age, and the normal potting blemishes(glaze pits, etc. associated with hand production. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. Both the tea bowls, as well as larger sized bowls such as this are relatively rare. Both styles of tea bowls as well(oil spot” and“hare’s fur” are a very sought after variation of Song

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Somewhere in the dim mists of ancient Chinese mythology. The dragon came to represent male virtues; and the female counterpart, the“dragon’s bride” came to be the phoenix bird. This theme of dragon and dragon’s bride, or phoenix bird, became an extremely popular motif during the Ming Dynasty(14th-17th century) especially in decorative arts such as porcelain vases, bowls, etc. This very large wall plaque continues this theme, with a very handsome and clear depiction of the a classic mythological ancient Chinese dragon. The dragon symbolizes the Chinese people and the people from Chinese origin considered themselves. With a certain amount of pride, descendants from the dragon" According to legend, this ancestral dragon was a creature with a deer's antlers, a camel's head, the eyes of a hare, the neck of a serpent, the teeth of a crocodile, claws of an eagle, paws like a tiger, and the ears of a buffalo. It is a fairly large-sized piece. The size of a very large honeydew melon. You can also see that two(non-functional) handles” were added to the vessel, likewise made from grey clay, and attached to the bowl while both were still wet. What
