From Ancient Egypt. During the Roman period, a couple of thousand years ago, comes this beautiful statuette fragment. The subject is Harpocrates, the child Horus, with his chubby infant cheeks and mysterious expression. Harpocrates counsels silence, and, I suppose, caution. He became very popular all over the Roman empire as a domestic god. Come to think of it, I have found him pretty useful myself at times: He's made in red-orange terra cotta. Nicely mounted for presentation or adoration. Dimensions are about 3.25 inches high, including the stand. Provenance is a recent French archaeological auction.
