Tang Dynasty, 8th or 9th Century A.D. Possibly a Ming Dynasty or 18th or 19th Century Qing Dynasty Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 151 millimeters(6 inches) Breadth: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Thickness: 82 millimeters(3 3/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. No repairs but the majority of glaze is gone. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any decorative item which was buried for over one thousand years. Glaze is remarkable, almost entirely intact! DETAIL: A splendid. Very large black/brown glazed earthenware bowl in the style of the Song or Jin Dynasty of Ancient China. This particular style was produced using a black glaze, high in iron oxides. In the kiln the iron would oftentimes come to the surface of the glaze, creating brown/rust-colored“oil spots” or streaky“hare’s fur” patterns on the otherwise black glaze. The style became extremely popular in ancient China, especially with Japanese Monks to whom the Chinese exported this unique and rare product. Tea bowls were the most common produce of this technique. This particular bowl is a variation of this style, where rather than a large number of spots or drips, instead larger areas of high iron glaze were used to produce these large rust-colored streaks in the otherwise black-predominated glaze. Ancient South Arabian Alabaster Head Sculpture - 600 BC
An ancient south Arabian alabaster head. Dating to around 600– 300 BC. This mysterious carving has a somewhat otherworldly quality. Similar heads are known from the ancient city of Marib. Capital of the Sabaean kingdom and legendary domain of the Queen of Sheba. They appear to have been set into large limestone stela commemorating the dead. Though we cannot know the name of the man for whom this carving was produced, he must have been someone of means, perhaps one of the wealthy traders of frankincense and myrrh for which Marib was so famous in antiquity. To the ancients. The kingdoms of southern Arabia lay at the very edge of the known world, seemingly cresting the boundary between myth and reality. Only the hardiest, or most foolhardy of travellers attempted to reach this exotic land beyond the great deserts. Luristan- 9" Spear Head- Bronze(circa 1250-800 BC) For your consideration: a cast bronze spear head with a leaf-shaped blade. A raised central midrib, and short rat-tail tang. Lorestan(Luristan) bronze refers to a set of Early Iron Age bronze artifacts that have been recovered from the Lorestan and Kermanshah areas in west-central Iran. These skilled Indo-European craftsmen of Media or Persia. Produced some of the finest weaponry then available. Northern/Western area of Ancient Persia: Circa 1250-800 B.C. This spear would have been made for a hand-held thrusting weapon rather than a lighter javelin or throwing spear. The head has a very short tang to anchor it in its wooden shaft and was then tied by the holes in the blade’s shoulders. Grit composition, as well as the general collection provenance indicate it is a Phoenician ceramic-it came from a prehistoric Mediterranean collection.
