A charming ancient South Arabian alabaster'beehive' jar. Dating to the 3rd Century B.C. 2nd Century A.D. The vessel demonstrating remarkable craftsmanship. Being carved and polished carefully from a single block of veined alabaster. The piece has a flat base and two small lug handles positioned bilaterally. This type of alabaster jar. Or so-called beehive-shaped vessel, has been found at archaeological sites throughout Arabia, including necropoli on the Persian Gulf island of Bahrain, but the majority have been found in Yemen whence they were made and exported. Vessels of this type were intended as containers for expensive unguents in the form of semi-solid perfumed ointments or animal-fat grease. A large orange-ware terracotta Phoenician transport amphora. Ca. 5th- 3rd century BC.The vessel, with long body and conical base, the shoulder tapering to the mouth, no neck, the rim vertical without a lip, round handles to either side. The vessel is decorated large with ridges around the mouth, just below the shoulder, smaller ridges on the lower body, and matching ridges to the top on the base. Intact, no breaks, cracks, repair or restoration, earthen deposits, a few scuffs, otherwise pristine. An ancient south Arabian limestone pillar stele. Dating to the 3rd– 1st century BC. The head sculpted in relief with robust features; prominent ridge. Long nose, almond-shaped hollow eyes and a terse mouth. A Sabaean inscription runs beneath, likely the name of the dedicator. A confidently carved, artistic example with a haunting quality. Cut off by great deserts to the north. South Arabia remained a virtually inaccessible and semi-mythological region throughout classical antiquity. The sculpture of the period seems to typify this sense of mystique, of the unknowable. This piece may have been a votive offering from an individual seeking assistance or protection from the gods. AGE, Circa 2nd- 3rd Century AD, HEIGHT, 7.5" 19cm) DESCRIPTION, This is the face of a Gandharan Buddhist Bodhisattva. Who retains the being of a buddha but elects to stay out of Nirvana to help all sentient beings. Gandharan art, or so called Greco-Buddhist art, is famous for having produced the first physical representations of the buddha as influenced by classical art. Hence, the figure has deep Western features derived from classical iconography. He is depicted here with a turban and a serene face and was originally carved probably as a repair onto a Gandharan statue as witnessed by the hole on the back. The nose and some of the cheek have restorations, otherwise nicely intact with earthen encrustations.
