CLASSIFICATION: Sancai(Three-Color” Glazed Porcelain Wall Plaque. ATTRIBUTION: China. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 213 millimeters(8 1/2 inches) Thickness: 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) CONDITION: Exceptionally good– almost perfectly preserved. A little wear consistent with any household item which is close to two centuries in age. The customary blemishes inherent in hand production of porcelain– warts and dimples. Zits and pits. Not flawless, but certainly in a very good state of preservation. DETAIL: A splendidly preserved three color wall plaque so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming and early Qing Dynasty artwork. Somewhere in the dim mists of ancient Chinese mythology. The dragon came to represent male virtues; and the female counterpart, the“dragon’s bride” came to be the phoenix bird. This theme of dragon and dragon’s bride, or phoenix bird, became an extremely popular motif during the Ming Dynasty(14th-17th century) especially in decorative arts such as porcelain vases, bowls, etc. This very large wall plaque continues this theme, with a very handsome and clear depiction of the a classic mythological ancient Chinese dragon. The dragon symbolizes the Chinese people and the people from Chinese origin considered themselves. With a certain amount of pride, descendants from the dragon" According to legend, this ancestral dragon was a creature with a deer's antlers, a camel's head, the eyes of a hare, the neck of a serpent, the teeth of a crocodile, claws of an eagle, paws like a tiger, and the ears of a buffalo. This mythical creature was capable of ascending to the heavens, and descending to the depths of the sea, and was able to morph from its dragon form into other forms. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Well Preserved Genuine Ancient ... moreEarthenware Impressed Jar/Vase BC500. CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. An essential reference for students, researchers, and teachers, as well as those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel addition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. Critically Acclaimed ... moreHistory of the Dramatic Discovery of Mankind’s Oldest Remains– Lucy! By Donald Johanson& Maitland Edey. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: If you have any interest in archaeology or the origins of mankind. This is a MUST READ. Acclaimed both by critics as well as the general public– the story of one of the most significant finds ever of Paleoanthropology. 409 pages. Publisher: Simon and Schuster; 1981) When Donald Johanson discovered a partial skeleton. Approximately 3.5 million years old, in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia in November of 1974, he knew he had stumbled onto something unique. Bursting with all the suspense and intrigue of a fast-paced adventure novel, and filled with lively, up-to-the-minute scientific detail and marvelous illustrations in color and black-and-white, this significant book unfolds the extraordinary discovery of“Lucy” the oldest, most complete, best-preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ancestor ever found, and the first new species to be named in more than 15 years. The book reveals the controversial change Lucy makes in our view of human origins, and provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the entire history of paleoanthropology; as well as the eccentric, colorful characters who are and were a part of it. In January 1979. Johanson’s startling“official” announcement of his discovery of Lucy(which is how the world knows her, from the Beatle’s song“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” even though her scientific name is Australopithecus afarensis) was an event that captured headlines, catapulted a young, relatively unknown American paleoanthropologist into international acclaim, and created a spirited, ongoing controversy among experts; including most notably Mary and Richard Leakey, in this wonderfully enigmatic field of fierce rivalries and astonishing breakthroughs. VERY INTERESTING EARLY LOOKING SHEET SILVER REPOUSSE PLATE -2nd - 5th CENTURY AD
this could turn out to be a very rare piece. I highly recommend viewing so you can have a good look at it and test the metal, the information i was given was that this is a sheet silver repousse plate from the 2nd-5th century AD, info very welcome if this is correct as i have paid rather alot of money for it. the plate measures about 20.9cm across and weighs about 84 grams on my scales. it has some tiny pin holes, also uneven and distorted in places, info welcome on the scene. around the border on the raised dots there is a gold colour showing through, also on the back rim there is a scratch mark where it was probably tested and that is also a yellow metal colour, so even tho i was told this was sheet silver im having to sell as unknown metal, testing is best option, would be nice if it turned out to be gold. but as it has no hallmarks and ... moreebay rules state if no hallmarks it has to be sold as unknown metal. but my opinion has to go with what i was told when i bought it. surely an extremely rare piece which displays well, its still in very dirty condition but displays well. it came from a collection that was formed in the 1990s along with lots more rare and unusual pieces ive been listing. here is a link to how a similar example was made of sheet silver. Exclusive collector of relics. Curios and artifacts from the past. Store Search Categories Store Search Categories. OVERSIZED MOTTLED PINK SANDSTONE HEAD OF A BODHISATTVA INDIA. MATHURA REGION KUSHAN PERIOD 2ND CENTURY AD Size: 35 x 26 cms( 15 x 10 inches) A magnificent mottled red sandstone head of a Bodhisattva. The face regal and serene, wearing a princely turban with a roaring lion face at the centre and heavy earrings. Mathura is located on the right bank of the Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges some 150 km south of Delhi in Uttar Pradesh. It sits at the junction of India’s trade routes and by the first century AD was a thriving religious and commercial centre. Described by Ptolemy as a‘City of Gods’ early Indian texts state that the inhabitants lived by trade rather than by agriculture. Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism all coexisted peacefully, ... morealong with the worship of nature-spirits, and traders and acolytes brought religious and cultural influences to the city. Mathura’s heyday lasted from the first to the third century AD, until the Sasanian incursions of the mid-third century. Despite a partial revival under the Gupta rulers of the fourth to the seventh century, the city never regained its former glory and eventually lost its position as a commercial and religious centre. Mathura sculpture is typically produced from mottled red sandstone quarried locally. Popular motifs include sensual young women, mythical beasts, nature and water spirits(yakshis and nagas) architectural elements, flora and fauna, and bacchanalian scenes. Mathura sculpture is often fleshy and full figured, and its protagonists(both religious and secular) are dressed in diaphanous clothing with multiple folds. While its form is essentially Indian, the influences of Greece and Rome, assimilated via the Silk Road, are also present. General, Shipping, Payment, © 2014 ASIAN HEART PAST ASIANART-PAST

Circa 2nd - 3rd Century AD Gandharan Schist Face of a Bodhisattva
AGE, Circa 2nd- 3rd Century AD, HEIGHT, 7.5" 19cm) DESCRIPTION, This is the face of a Gandharan Buddhist Bodhisattva. Who retains the being of a buddha but elects to stay out of Nirvana to help all sentient beings. Gandharan art, or so called Greco-Buddhist art, is famous for having produced the first physical representations of the buddha as influenced by classical art. Hence, the figure has deep Western features derived from classical iconography. He is depicted here with a turban and a serene face and was originally carved probably as a repair onto a Gandharan statue as witnessed by the hole on the back. The nose and some of the cheek have restorations, otherwise nicely intact with earthen encrustations.
