A well provenanced and rare ancient pottery jug. From the Persian Empire, dating to approximately the 2nd to 1st millennium B.C. A high quality. Beautifully modeled, miniature buff pottery jug. With bulging anthropomorphic body and tall, cylindrical neck, featuring adjacent pierced handles and splayed tripod feet. Constructed from fine reddish clay with a thin grey core, making the vessel surprisingly light. Bands of finely incised hatched pendant triangles decorate this wonderful piece. This bronze axe head is not from Luristan but was made hundreds of miles to the west of Persia.It predates Luristani weaponry by 2000 years.This is also not a tribal weapon.This is an excellent example of one of the world's first manufactured Military weapons.By that statement I mean to say that these were made in large quantities to equip particular ranks of a country's army.Per Ebay policy I cannot mention this axehead's country of origin but if you know archaeologica you already have that answer.There is an old excavation inventory number painted on the back of the shaft hilt(195)I believe this was excavated probably in the 1930's when there was huge effort by the British to unearth the tombs and mudbrick temples of that area.I did purchase this item from Great Britain.313 grams.The shaft is 3 5/8" from the back,the ... moreblade is 3 5/8" from the forward edge of the shaft hole,one chip on the upper shaft edge,nice original patina.This item was made to exacting standards and it has"perfect" symmetry.If you are an ancient history buff you understand one of the reasons Phillip of Macedon conquered all of Greece was because of the standard of his weapons production.They maintained weapons factories and were able to standardize production and quality.This country's army also had standardized weapon production.Many bronze axeheads from other parts of the Near East are readily available on Ebay.This type is much harder to find.

Ancient Near Eastern Early Iron Age Iron & Bronze Sword - 900 BC
A rare Ancient Near Eastern bronze and Iron sword. Dating to approximately 900 B.C. A very rare example. Notable for the almost complete preservation of its iron blade, which is often missing or so badly corroded that it has been removed and replaced with a bronze blade. The blade itself is of triangular form and of thick section. Decorated with three converging ridges on both sides, which accentuate the length and robust feel of the weapon. The hilt is of typical form, made of bronze with discoid pommel and ridge decoration on the handle. The tang insertion of the blade is visible from the back of the hilt, entering the pommel. Perhaps in antiquity the pommel may have been capped with a limestone or lapis-lazuli ornament. Length of sword: 17 3/4 inches. Condition. Exceptional. Unrestored.
