IL- ... moreFar west Chicago suburbs) UP FOR AUCTION: A gorgeous. Vintage, Art Deco, walnut waterfall-style cedar-lined blanket or hope chest. Elegant contrasting veneer inlay work on front center. It's unmarked as to maker. I think it's likely circa early to mid-1900s. I believe it's in original condition. It has one interior. Multi-sectioned drawer on hinges(in need of minor repair-see below) It's constructed of walnut veneer with cedar lining, and secondary hardwood(s) The back is unfinished. Wonderful for storage and display or seating, it's both beautiful and superbly useful. CONDITION: Overall. I think it's in nice vintage condition. Solid and sturdy. Only the tiniest bit of veneer loss that I can see: a few tiny chips along the back edge. Minor nicks, imperfections normal to vintage furniture. It does have some flaws: 1) the top surface has superficial scratches and age-related splits in the veneer(but they seem shallow enough to me that I think just polyurethane(were the top refinished) and/or a walnut-tone pore filler would be enough to fill them for a flawless(or nearly so) top. 2) In the interior. Lid, left side, the wood affixing the screw supporting the pull-out shelf is stripped(please see photos; the drawer is just propped in place in the photo) so is in need of this repair. I'd probably suggest filling the oversized hole with wood scraps and glue to fill, then redrilling the hole(possibly a larger screw would work) this is left to the buyer. 3) The locks on these old chests pose a safety hazard to children(won't open from within; children can suffocate inside) and can't be sold with the lock in place. I've removed and discarded it. Leaving just the hardware(for aesthetics) so it simply opens and closes, and can be opened from inside. The buyer, if he/she desires a working lock, can probably purchase one through ebay or vi

On The One Piece Of The Brass There Is Writting But All I Can Really Make Out Is Yale. There Was A Piece Of Paper Inside It That Says 1939. This Does Show Some Wear Such As Marks, Scrapes, Other Flaws But It Just Adds To It. On The Inside It Is Nice And Clean But There Are Some Like Cracks In Several Places But I Dont Think They Go All The Way Through. Even With The Flaws It Is Still A Great Looking Piece. Antique primitive tool chest with metal stand- folk art paint
This is a nice old tool chest with metal stand. It looks like it was painted with blue/ grey milk paint but don't think it would have been old enough for that. This has a holder in the top lid for a hand saw. There are two small drawers but they are hard to show in the photo. Somebody broke into this chest at some time because they lost the key. The original lockstep is in the drawer and could be reinstalled if you get a key that fits. Otherwise you can order a new lock set from one of the reproduction wood working supply companies. This chest measures 35 1/2" long by 16 1/2" wide by 15" tall. When you set it on the metal stand it measures 27" tall. This is a nice example of a primitive chest and displays nicely inside. Antique / Vintage 19.5" Dovetailed Wooden Chest / Box
This is an Antique/ Vintage 19 1/2" Dovetailed Wooden Chest/ Box. The chest has a hinged lid with scalloped edges. The base of the box measures 19 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 9 1/8" The body of the box exclusive of the base measures 18 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 6 5/8" The depth of the box on the inside is 8 1/2" The corner joints are curved finger joints. Often colloquially called dovetails(dovetails have a triangular profile whereas finger joints have parallel, horizontal edges) The box has a dark finish on the outside with a nice patina of age. The inside is unfinished. We do not know the type of wood. Perhaps you can tell from the appearance of the finished outside and the unfinished inside. The bottom of the box is made from a 1/8" thick sheet of plywood. On one photo of the inside you can see some wooden strips ... moreor shims. It is possible that the bottom was damaged and replaced and these were part of the repair. But we do not know for sure. The box has a lock but. As found, there is no key. There is what appears to be the remnant of a paper label on the back inside panel as seen. The front inside panel also had some sort of paper covering and there are remnants of this at several place. Antique Document Storage Chest -- Oak, Black Lacquer, Oriental Painted Scenes
This is a heavy oak storage chest fitted with divider slats on the inside as if for document storage. Rather than the more common blanket chest style that comes in this shape and size. It measures about 33" x 16" at the top, and stands about 20½" tall plus the scroll-sawn backstop, which adds another 5" I'll mostly let the pictures do the talking, but you can see how it's been coated in black paint or lacquer, with the oriental scenes and symbols hand painted on most of the flat surfaces. The back is mostly not lacquered, obviously intended to be backed up against a wall, and someone has handwritten the number"424" on it, and, rather redundantly, the word"oak. It does indeed appear to be made primarily of oak, and did I already mention how heavy it is? I don't see any manufacturer identification ... moreon it. And I really have no idea of its age. I don't think they make these any more, certainly not out of oak, and the attention to detail- the butterfly shaped brass lock plate, for instance, and the quality of the paintings, and the matching scroll-sawn front edges of the dividers- suggest the workmanship of a bygone era more than a late 20th century reproduction. The front. As you can see, is hinged at the bottom, so the whole front panel opens out and down, with the lock at the upper center. We don't have a key for it, but it has been retrofitted with a magnetic catch to prevent it from falling open. Other than that, it looks solid and sturdy, and heavy. Apart from the small areas of delamination on the left side of the front, it is in very intact condition, with maybe a few nicks and stress cracks here and there, but more in the nature of"character" and"patina" than actual damage. One weird thought I keep having is that the document storage style of this item is more akin to a desktop than to a free-standing chest. With that in mind. From the gorgeous selection of clearest grained walnut, to the dovetailed everything everywhere, to the many perfectly sized fixtures& holders for every size of bit, chisel& tool. Even the small interior drawers are gorgeously dovetailed on all four corners with rebated bottoms. I've included as many photos as possible in order to attempt to show some of the many exquisite details of this gorgeous chest. But it would really have to be seen to be fully admired. Eve the way the hinge is recessed and the iron hanging brackets are beautifully done. Imagine what this might have looked like with all of its tools inside. a place for everything& everything ... morein its place" and this was a lot of things! I've put in some old screwdrivers to try to indicate the scale of this rather large box, although I think those holders were actually for drill bits of some sort. The box measures about 30" High(plus the forged iron hanging brackets) 20" wide closed(40" open) 10" deep.Some patina& signs of use add character& interest& history to this piece, it was clearly very well taken care of(for a tool box) likely used lovingly by the same cabinetmaker who crafted it. Vintage Toy Box Blanket Chest Shabby Cottage Hand Painted Folk Art 24 Long x 16 Deep x 13 High This is a well constructed chest trimmed with moldings and vintage metal cup handles. It would be a lovely place to store toys. Extra blankets, sweaters or whatever you need to store It could be used as a little side or coffee table or at the end of a twin bed. The cover sits nice and tightly despite a chip under the hinge in the back. I do not know how old or who painted this chest. I was first drawn to it when I saw the molding as it looked like an antique ice chest I have had for years. The decorative painting and handles could have been added later. I think it is oak or ash. I forgot to take a picture of the unpainted bottom before I packed it for shipping. Its not pine. It has a lot of grain. As you can see in the pictures this is a shabby ... morelooking piece. The paint has crazing. The handles have some rust, there are ring marks on the top and there are some small chips. It is still very cute and if you like naturally aged things you will like this piece. I packed it very well wrapping it in bubble. Shrink wrap and paper to try and keep the weight down. Here is an antique Steamer Trunk Wardrobe. The sides are flat so this could be used as an interesting coffee table. The outside brass has a little oxidation and there are assorted nicks and dings from use but overall it's in pretty good shape. It has all four(4) drawers. The top drawer locks and I believe one of the keys works in that lock. All the hanging mechanisms work- the hanging bars extend out etc. I have all the wooden hangers(see photo) It smells a little musty inside but probably nothing Febreeze and fresh air won't fix. The lock on the outside works and I have two(2) original keys plus a new one I had to have made when I locked the keys inside. I have always called this the Circus trunk because I bought it in Sarasota. Florida which has very strong circus ties. Sarasota was for many years the winter home of Ringling Brothers ... moreCircus and Barnum and Bailey Circus and now has an excellent Circus Museum and the Ringling Art Museum(formerly the Ringling residence) The man I bought the trunk from said it had belonged to a circus performer. Antique French Trunk Storage Chest Raised Metal European
At auction is a very fine old French chest. It has great age. Patina on the metal and wood. It looks to be brass raised and dimpled metal, with different scenes on 4 panels. Inside of the box is 24" long by 18" deep by 13.5" wide Top lid size is 27.5" long by 15 3/4" wide. It has a tag on the under side of the lid that says made in France. There was another tag beside it but part of it is missing. The writing and the ink reenforce its age. I am not positive when it was made. But you can see from the pictures its very old. I havent been able to find anything like it to compare it to. My guess is mid 1800th century to the early 1900s. It has a few small nails missing on the bottom left back corner. Where it had been hit probably while moving it. Metal is all there just needs a few nails. Over all condition is good. ... moreIt has a small piece of wood missing at the top left corner. you can see it in the picture. It was from the nail that holds the corner together. The wood boards in the inside look like the were hand sawed, and have file, rasp marks. You can see it the picture that shows the lid opened. Not positive what the wood is but it looks to be walnut. The bottom and back are bare wood. It has 4 metal wheels on the bottom. This is a great old piece, please look at the pictures good. Any questions email me and I will respond as soon as possible. Antique steamer trunk Hump back Dome lid child size chest Tin wood or cardboard
This is bigger than a doll trunk I think. But smaller than an adult size, so I think it was probably for a child to use while traveling or for storage. 20" wide, 12 1/2" tall and 11 1/2" deep. I think it has a this layer of tin with a faux wood grain patter on it and that is either over cardboard or wood. The chest is not super heavy, about 9 1/2 pounds, so it is probably a combination of both materials. Please use the pictures to determine condition. You can tell this was used and it is showing its age. One side has the remnants of what looks like was a leather handle, but the other side does not even have the metal parts of that handle. There are some rivets missing, one of the latches on the front side is missing parts and none of the three seems functional. One of the hinges on the back side is painted green. The tin covering ... moreis scuffed and dented. Still, overall condition for its age, is not really that bad. The lid opens and closes easily and the whole trunk is still solid, not wobbly. I don't have a tray or a key for this one.

Antique Dome Top Child ~ Doll ~ Toy Trunk, Wood Storage Chest, 26x15x14
We believe this dome top trunk to be an antique. And based on it's smaller size possibly a child's trunk or toy trunk. There is no longer a label on the trunk but the inside lid has a print of a bird(see photo) feeding her chicks. The trunk is done with an interesting combination of dark brown and ivory. It looks like the ivory was painted on but probably a good while ago since there is quite a bit of rust and discoloration coming through the paint. The dark brown areas look like tin or some thin metal that has been embossed with the scrolled pattern. The interior still has quite a bit of paper inside but the paper lining is not in good condition. There is a loose bracket on one side that should probably be fixed if the trunk is going to be opened regularly. There are two latches on the front that are still intact. The lock in the ... morecenter is missing the bottom section(the piece mounted on the bottom of the trunk) The trunk could be used"as is" for a primitive decorative piece. ANTIQUE CARVED WOODEN CHINESE DRAGON OR LION SCULPTURE CHEST STAND SET LEGS
I believe these are to put a chest on. These are very old and look to be a Chinese Dragon but could be a lion. The top carved head and the whole top piece is one piece of wood. The legs were added, but show no screws or bolts, but are on very solid. The front leg is also carved, but the back leg is not which makes me think you would not see the back legs in whatever use these were for. They measure about 28" long and stand about 9 1/2" high. These have some wear here and there which is typical for age, nothing major, otherwise are in nice condition.These just came out of an attic and could use a good dusting.
