For sale: This is an antique newel post stair baluster from the Victorian era. It stands 39" tall. Has a cannonball top 5.5" in diameter, and I believe it is made of oak. It has a cracked and chipped patina and is a sand over white. Although the cannonball top has a crack it is still very solid. One side has nail holes from its original installation.see photos. The square bottom measures 6" x 6" It is solid and heavy, weighing almost 22 pounds. This was in my Father's collection of many. Many things all stored in the attic and barn. Wonderful boxed newel post with a foliate newel cap. Dating from the early 1900s. This box newel features a simple body with beaded trim panels, the upper ones embellished with flower rosettes. The middle body features recessed panels with ribbon and bellflower details. The newel has been painted red with a brown finial, and a banister piece protrudes from one of the four sides. FINELY CARVED NEWEL POST NEWEL POST. 20" high. 6 1/2" wide(maximum) 6" deep(maximum) the dominant feature a griffin's head, mouth agape, six teeth threatening, the swept-back whiskers and hair(the latter upraised as well) suggesting the wings whose presence we are denied, an interlocking cartouche carved into the beast's baluster-shaped chest, a cylindrically-shaped, turned dome on either side medially, as stumps of wings. The base measures 4 7/8" by 2" the top 4 7/8" square; the four pieces of wood at the top's perimeter, joined at 45-degree angles at their corners, constitute a later addition(one of these is loose and requires a second nail) The piece is not quite free-standing(it falls forward) and bears a slotted hook on its backside to secure it upright. The composition is in three layers; three ... moresections of wood are visible when the top of the post is viewed. And further, hairline separations are visible along the length of either side. The base strip is 7/8" thick, the center 2" thick, the top(which bears most of the carving) varying in depth. The wood grain at the juncture of the top and center sections is very nearly continuous along most of the length, while that between the center section and the backing section is obviously different. The wood throughout is apparently the same species, perhaps oak. Given the short height. This is in all probability part of a larger(taller) composition. The carving throughout is fine, and in fine state.

Vintage Wood Newel Post Section: Came from an old building in NYC
Vintage newel post section from an old building in NYC. Not sure of exact age or type of wood. 12.5" tall. The base is 9.25" in diameter. The middle section at its widest is 21" in circumference. Some distressing(chips in stain. Crackling in finish, etc. that should be expected in a vintage item such as this. No major damage. Stained a dark color, but can easily be sanded and refinished. Great old piece to display on a mantle as is, or place a pillar candle on top of it for a unique look. So cool!

It consists of a multi turn newel post and two matching banister posts. They are in the original varnish finish and they came right off the staircase. In shiny condition, but you will definitely want to plug the holes where the rails went in it and finish off the sides. Also where the staircase it has been cut out and around, but everyone does their own adaptations. The newel post has an approximately 6 inch block. The size of the block on top of the newel post is 6 inches. The banisters have a 4 inch block and ball. The height is approximately 54 inches on the newel post and 52 inches on the banister post. You are getting all three for one money. I have seen these sell for all kinds of money from some of the higher price dealers, but we are reasonable on this sort of thing. This is a vintage pine newel post with a domed top. Very nice grain in the wood. It measures aprox. 43 3/4" high x 8" square at the top, 7 3/4" square at the bottom, the notch on the bottom is 3 1/4" deep x 6 1/2" high. Antique Crystal Acorn Newel Post Finial - Beautiful & Large, 8.5 " x 5"
This is a gorgeous antique solid crystal finial for a newel post. In the traditional acorn style. It is quite large at about 8.5" tall with base and 5" wide. The solid brass base is about 2" x 2" and is in excellent condition. The crystal has one very small chip near the top and some teeny scratches(hardly visible. There are also some small particles suspended inside the solid crystal. The finial weighs 10 pounds.

Super piece from what must have been a wonderful Victorian home. Found in Minnesota. Overall dimensions are 51 high and about 12 inch diameter. Aged Gothic Newel Post / Handrail in Walnut
Up for auction is a beautiful Gothic newel post and handrail in Walnut. This has a great weathered look and would also be appropriate in a Garden. As the walnut should last many years. Post is in nice but weather condition with a small piece of walnut molding that makes up the Gothic arch missing as well as trim piece that is missing at the bottom. Post is 38" tall at the handrail, 45" tall at the newel finial attachment and 9" deep. Newel is 27" long. Description This is a nice piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It is made of walnut and is painted. The cap is not original. The top has carved flowers on 3 sides. The shaft is fluted with another carved flower in the middle. The corners have beveled edges. The base is notched for the step but it is freestanding. It measures 47.25 inches tall. It is 8 inches square at the base and 6.5 inches square at the shaft. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning. Striking antique walnut newel post dating from the late 1800's. The newel begins with sloping top and fluted details. Intricate rosettes ornament each side of the square post. The rest of the newel's substantial silhouette features chamfered edges and grooved detailing. Antique chestnut wood newel post 48" tall historic vintage architectural salvage
Beautiful historic/ antique chestnut wood newel post. Post was painted black previously but has been completely hand refinished. Stained and polyurethaned and is in great condition! Exact age is unknown but is at least over 100 years old and still very sturdy! The bottom corner is notched to fit over the corner of a step(see photos) The newel post measures 4 feet tall and approx. 6" wide in the center section. There is a small portion of the circular rosette missing(see last photo) but is not noticeable at all. The side shown without the rosette is the side that the handrail would attach to.

Description This is a great piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It is made of oak and is currently painted white. It has it's original cap which is unpainted. 3 sides have fluting on the shaft. It is notched for the step but is freestanding. It measures 46.25 inches tall. 7 inches square at the base and 5.75 square at the shaft. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning but should clean up nicely. There are some nail holes here and there and a few chips at the bottom. Please look at the pictures carefully. Antique Vintage Newel Post. Was told by the person I purchased it from that it came from a pre 1900's farm house that was torn down recently. He also told me that it was oak and believes it to be the original finish. It's in really good condition for being a hundred plus years old. There are a couple of blemishes from where it was attached to the rest of the railing including one crack at the bottom. All blemishes are pictured. Antique ARCHITECTURAL Salvage Oak NEWEL POST with Old Chippy White Paint Size: 45 3/4" tall x 8" x 8" overall(all measurements are approximate) Description: This whimsical antique newel post will add architectural interest to your home- the possibilities are endless. These are often seen only in decorator magazines and are hard to find. Even in antique stores. This is out of a Victorian mansion in the Los Angeles area. This one is wonderful and heavy with nice thick moldings and a whimsical details. The old white paint is all perfectly time worn. Shabby and chippy. You can see the original oak wood underneath in the photos, in places where the paint is worn off. It has been indoors for all of it's life so there is no dry rot that I sometimes see on wood that has been out in the elements. Though the paint is chippy and worn ... moreit is not'shedding' as some others are. There are carved wooden ribbon applique details on 3 sides- so romantic! Please see the photos of showing the cut out notches on the bottom of the back side. They are pretty much all this way when they are removed from a stairway(see last two photos) This could easily be filled in with some old wood or you can just turn that side toward the wall as I have. Even with the notched-out area on the base it still stands alone and is quite sturdy. There is also a rough area near the top on the back side where it was removed from the banister. There are a few minor age splits on the surface of the wood that are tight and do not distract- just adds to its character. This one is flat on the top which is nice to use to display a statue or other objects.
