Highly Carved Antique Victorian Oak Newel Post Cap in Original Condition
Here's a very ornately carved cap to an oak newel post which must have come from some impressive Victorian building. This would look stunning either built into a stairway of a Victorian home or as an interesting accent piece. There are a few chips. Bumps and nail holes and it is also quite dirty. But I'll leave any cleaning to the new owner. Although beautiful as is. The original quartersawn oak finish would certainly benefit from a little oil and wax to bring out the grain. It measures 21" tall by a maximum width of about 9 1/2" and weighs in at a hefty 17 pounds of solid oak. Shipping is $16 within the US only and pick up in person is free. Good luck!

ORNATE ANTIQUE CARVED OAK NEWEL POST- ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE N.Y.C. UNUSUAL RARE
PURCHASED IN NEW YORK CITY AND PICK UP OR SHIPPING WILL BE FROM NEW YORK) UP FOR SALE I HAVE A MASSIVE NEWEL POST THAT WAS SALVAGED FROM A BUILDING IN MANHATTAN/ NEW YORK CITY. THE STAIRCASE MUST HAVE BEEN GRAND TO ACCOMODATE THIS NEWEL POST. THE SHAPE IS RARE AND UNUSUAL. THE TOP IS VERY ROUNDED WITH HAND CARVED MOLDING AND DESIGN, INTRICATE CARVINGS THROUGHOUT, THAT IS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND BOLD WITH NUANCE OF DAYS GONE BY. THE INDIVIDUAL SKILL OF THE WOODCRAFTER IS REVEALED IN THE DETAIL AND LEVEL OF CRAFTSMANSHIP& ARTISTIC ABILITY. THESE BALUSTRADES WERE AS MUCH A STRUCTURAL COMPONENT AS WELL AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING A DECORATIVE ENHANCEMENT TO THE ENTRANCE OF A HOME OR ESTABLISHMENT. SIZE AND INTRICACY OF THE CARVINGS OFTEN SPEAK TO THE WEALTH OF THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THE PERIOD IN WHICH THEY WERE CRAFTED. SO THAT BEING SAID, ... moreWHOEVER THIS WAS CRAFTED FOR WAS VERY WEALTHY IF SIZE AND CARVING WERE A FACTOR! DON'T LET THIS OPPORTUNITY PASS YOU BY. OWN A PIECE OF NEW YORK HISTORY, POSSIBLY AN OLD MOVIE THEATRE OR BROADWAY THEATRE? THIS CAN STAND ALONE OR USED AS IT WAS PURPOSED FOR, STANDS TALL AND FIRM, NOT WOBBLY AND VERY HEAVY SOLID PIECE OF OAK, I BELIEVE. IT STANDS NEARLY FIVE(5) FEET TALL. THE BASE IS 20 INCHES X 12 INCHES DEEP, THE TOP CIRCUMFERENCE IS APPROXIMATELY 22 INCHES AND THE MIDDLE CIRCUMFERENCE IS APPROXIMATELY 24.5 INCHES, SO IT IS A VERY GRAND FOCAL POINT IN ANY PLACEMENT! UNFORTUNATELY. THIS WASN'T REMOVED DELICATELY DUE TO IT'S SIZE AND HOW WELL IT WAS BUILT AND THERE IS SOME RESTORATION THAT CAN EASILY BE DONE, THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT COLORS OF PAINT AS SEEN IN THE PICTURES, ONE SIDE A GREY, THE OTHER BLACK. THERE ARE NICKS AND NAIL HOLES. BUT AGAIN, FOR THE TALENTED CRAFTSMAN, THIS IS AN EASY RESTORATION, FOR THE COLLECTOR, JUST AS IT IS ADDS CHARACTER, UNDERNEATH THAT PAINT IS PROBABLY A GORGEOUS PIECE OF OAK. YOUR PREFERENCE. THE BASE IS NOTCHED FOR STAIRS BUT STANDS FREELY AND STRONG ON ITS OWN. SOLID WOOD, NO GESSO, JUST PAINTED ON EITHER SIDE. I TRIED TO TAKE P

ARCHITECTURAL ANTIQUE : UNUSUAL CARVED OAK NEWEL POST FINIAL
Vintage carved oak newel post finial. The overall combination of carved and turned shapes gives this piece a very distinctive and visually appealing appearance. The medium dark oak finish has been cared for with hand rubbed oil for many years in my home. The splayed base is topped with a turned shaft that supports a wide circular turned and carved body element. The wide body tapers to a turned finial topped with a circular crown. The wide circular body has some joints between segments of wood that have opened up. But. This only adds to the overall character of this piece. It is a survivor! It's warm, satin body has the wear of time. The dings, nail holes and open joints are appropriate for a piece with over 100 years of use. The overall height of the finial is 15" The 3" tall splayed base is 9 1/2" W. x 8" D. The wide ... moreround body is approx. 6" in diam.Weight is approx. 4 1/2 lbs. Take a minute to look at this piece. It has great character and unusual massing that make it a highly desirable piece of architectural art.
