This horse ... morehead is more rare because it was cast from one mold. This process was known as being"Cast in the round" from one piece. Most casting found for sale are made from two molds. One for the left side and the other for the right side of the horses head. Once the molds have been cast they are joined which of course leaves a visible seam which over time can become loose and begin to separate. The horse head is heavy weighing approximately 8 pounds. It is difficult to get an exact weight since part of the old hitching post is still connected but can be removed if you prefer. The head measures 8" from the tip of the nose to the back of the horses mane. 9" tall, 3" wide, and the opening for the post is 2" in diameter. The total length including the pole is 36-1/2" The original tie up ring is still there but due to age it has come apart on one side. There's a 2-1/2" movable iron ring resting on a large carved oval orb. The columns are nicely carved with acanthus leaf design. The lower bases are intact. In very good to excellent condition. Some time during the mid 20th Century being reinforced with slide on steel tubing. One of the steel casings has slid down. See pix, it can be left as-is, slid back on or removed though not by me. Antique Black Cast Iron Victorian Lady's Head Hitching Fence Post All Original
Up for your consideration is a fancy 19th century Rare Hitching Post. This post has the Victorian Ladies Heads going around. All molded in Cast Iron detail. There is one side bare and we are not sure if it had a head there or was just the side facing into the property. The paint is badly worn, but we have left it all original for the new owner to deside about the restoration.There are some losses to the sides, but they are not noticeable. This is a full size post standing about 39" tall by 8" square. We have not found a foundry mark, but there may be one on it underneath. We will add to the listing if we get more history on this piece. This piece may be too heavy to send by regular ground. But it would be able to go by Greyhound Package Express very reasonably. 2 Primitive Antique Turned Wood Posts Black Finish Furniture or Architectural? I had an opportunity to go down state Illinois recently for the homecoming of my Alma Mater and shopped the wonderful sales. Barn sales and antique shops along the way. I have a huge variety of oldees for you this week- from 19th century primitives to 1950s kitsch- there’s something for everyone! What can I say- I just loved the look of this antique dynamic duo. The old black paint is shabby and worn. With the wood showing in all the right places, and the wood is turned into a lovely and interesting shape. Now, I don't know if they were an architectural detail, or if they were part of a piece of furniture, so I have listed them in both. Made of solid wood, you can see they were affixed to whatever on one side of each piece. There's two holes on the top, ... moreand one on the bottom. Both of the very top holes still have parts of the wood pins that used to affix them inside of the holes, as does one of the bottom holes- see my photos. Each one measures 17 1/2" long. One end is 1 3/4" square and they are painted, the other end looks more like a foot, they are unfinished and measure 1 5/8" diameter. The widest part of the pieces is one of the round areas and it is 2 3/4" wide. They are both in excellent solid and sturdy condition structurally with minor nicks, scratches, nibbles and scrapes to the wood. There's a little chipping up by the holes at the finished end where the pin inserts. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they may be oak, from the peeks of wood that I see. They are both barn fresh dirtydustydirty and could use a good cleaning. I have one word for these: prettyprettypretty! Please ask if you have any questions. Antique Black Cast Iron Horse Head Hitching Post with Ring weighs over 11 lbs
ANTIQUE HORSE HEAD CAST IRON HITCHING POST Nice heavy cast iron horse head hitching post with ring. The post is painted black. Age: Probably early to mid 20th century. Condition: The horse head is solid and sturdy. No breaks. Paint is chipping off in spots and it needs to be repainted especially if you plan to use it outdoors. Size: The head measures 11 1/4 inches tall with a 3 7/8 inch diameter opening for the attachment to a post. It weighs 11 1/2 pounds. Please see photos for further evaluation of condition.
