The joints have been covered with bands, just great quality French dore bronze mounts decoratet as wreath. Top plate is removable, with a pin device connecting it to the body, that can be span but not made to revolve(view the photos) Condition is good, minor age ware, and strong burgundy hairline veining that just adds to the charm. A fine and rare column base dating from the 19th century with wonderful patina. Lots of detail in the turnings. Roundel mounted on an octagonal base. Measures 15 1/4" across the base. The round top is 11 5/8" in diameter and has an inside lip 10" in diameter. Good overall condition and nice period blocking construction underneath. They are beautifully executed in solid heavy wrought iron with several layers of original paint. They measure 46" tall when in the ground. 69" total length. Diameter is 8" at the widest point. There's a 2-1/2" movable iron ring resting on a large carved oval orb. The columns are nicely carved with acanthus leaf design. The lower bases are intact. In very good to excellent condition. It features great quality carved and fluted column with large Greek scroll sections. The top portion is supported on a bronze rod which allows the top to swivel to allow easy viewing of the backside of any heavy sculpture or statuary. There are signs of small chips in some places and a crack in the bottom base(see closeup picture) which is normal considering the age. The crack at the bottom is sturdy and stable and is not opening up. As with many antique pedestals. There is a metal rod in the center shaft from top to bottom with wing nuts to keep the pedestal sturdy. You are bidding on an antique Cast Iron Hitching Post/ Horse Tie. This piece is signed. J.C. by one hole and"D" by the other. This piece is a Ball Top with two rings. One on each side. This item measures approximately 9 1/2" tall to the top of the ball. Each ring measures approximately 2 3/16" across. The bottom of the post measures approximately 4 3/4" across and the inside measures approximately 4" across. There are three holes around the outside of the post so it can be secured to a wooden post. There is a crack in the ball of the piece. You can see it in the photos. Authentic Cast Iron Horse Hitching Post, Mid 19th Century Antique, New Orleans
This hitching post topper is guaranteed not to be a reproduction. Very heavy cast iron horse head never had a ring. We've seen this exact post in authentic pictures of the old French Quarter in New Orleans. Ours does not have a hallmark or any identication marks to indicate who made it. As you can see in the photos. There is no rust on the outside, and only a bit of natural oxidation can be seen inside, near the notched part where it was attached to a post. There are a couple of splatters of white paint on one side, see photo. We rescued this piece from the tack room in a Western Iowa barn. It stands 15 1/2" tall. Weighs 27 pounds, and is exactly as we found it, very clean and undamaged(except for the lack of the pole it was attached to) We can see no evidence of repairs or alterations.
