I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top bookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. The main structure is satinwood which has a lovely blonde finish to the wood. Whilst into the structure of this has been embedded the amazingly intricate inlay work consisting of floral scrolls, leaves, urns, emblems and other heraldry. The amount of craftmanship that has gone into this is breathtaking if you imagine each piece of design has to be cut from the softer fruitwoods and then embedded into the main structure of the desk. You can only imagine how long this would take to achieve for a piece like this. The term'Carlton House' has become a popular phrase to describe a writing table with a low superstructure that encloses the sides of the writing area as well as the back. The Prince of Wales. Later George IV, commissioned a table of this model in the 1790s for Carlton House. The desk has a leather topped writing area surrounded by small drawers. Cupboards and storage areas. There are also five larger drawers to the front of the desk so there is ample storage space on this piece. Each of the drawers also has more inlay work, as do the legs and the sides. This would make for a stylish piece for your home, offered as it is in perfect condition. The piece also sits on brass castors so it is easy to move around. I believe this desk was originally gray and it was painted green at some ... morepoint. Desks like this do not come up for sale often, people who have them refuse to sell them. You don't find lasting quality like this anymore! The desk has three drawers on one side and two drawers on the other side. One in the center and a flat pull out on each side for writing or whatever. This desk is very solid and heavy and in very good vintage condition, with normal wear for its age. It does normal wear and tear, but can easily be sanded down or chemically dipped and refinished to bring it back to good as new. All drawers are in great condition and pulls out good, but will need a light cleaning. No dents or major damage that I can see. I DO have the key for this desk. Awesome vintage desk. I acquired this desk with the intention of refinishing it. And using it in my cabin but I simply do not have time to do that. Measures: 60" long x 30" wide x 30" tall x 25-3/4" from the ground to the bottom of the center drawer(knee space) Weight: Approx 150 pounds! Prompt payment/ pickup is appreciated. I will accept cash upon pickup. I have also listed this item for sale locally. If it sells locally I will pull the ad. Retero Office sells these for $1700 bucks normally.
