Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. I don't think we want to try to address this particular issue but please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. Secretary desk with fold down writing surface and glass front upper bookshelf
Selling my childhood secretary desk that my parents purchased at an antique store in Vermont back in the 1980's. I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle loose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf ... moreunit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. The fold down writing surface is fully functional. It folds down and rests on the upper drawer which pulls out. Feel free to ask any questions if you need further description or clarification. Gorgeous Antique Maddox Governor Winthrop Drop Front Desk
This beautiful antique desk is is great condition. It was made by the Maddox company(see the picture with the company stamp in the drawer) The drawers all slide nicely and the detailing on the inside is perfect. The drop down lid opens to reveal a beautiful multi-drawer cubbyhole interior with a carved door and two cleverly disguised hidden compartments behind the multi-turned spindles. There is also a horizontal space beneath the cubbies perfect for sliding paper or books out of the way. There are four serpentine dovetail drawers and the base has multi-ply molding and four ball and claw feet(which I believe are in the Chippendale style) Original hardware. I try to include as many pictures as possible to give a good idea of the condition. This is a beautiful Chinese carved wood slant front writing desk with matching chair. We do not know how old it is. Nor who made it; there is one very much like it-same size, shape, hardware, little more carving-listed on Ebay, but I don't believe this one was made in the 1800's. It is very solid and very, very heavy. The Chair has a cushion on it and is also very solid and very heavy. The carving is on the front and both sides of the desk, and on the chair, as seen in the photos. All the feet on both chair and desk are carved at the bottom. Below the writing area, there are two pullout drawers. The desk measures about 42 inches high, 38 inches wide, and 16 inches deep. As with the other writing desk we listed. This is a pick up item. It is what is known as a spinet desk, which were first created in the 1600's and fell out of favor in the 1930's. Desk has decorative scroll ironworking on the top and bottom. And ornate bronze hardware pulls. Inside features 2 drawers and 1 center and 2 side cubbies. Bottom drawer extends almost the entire length of desk. Measures 45L X 19"D X 35"H. Looks to be mahogany burl veneer. But it could be walnut burl on desk front. Has some scratches and one small spot where the veneer is missing. But overall this desk is in very good condition considering it is an old piece. Finished in a rich brown polish.

Beautiful notched carpentry joints(see picture) and birds eye maple lined drawers(see picture) The metal hinge on the drop front says'PAT'D APR 5. 87' Specific age unknown but late 1880s or early 1890s thus seems probable. The dimensions of the desk are 45" tall x 30" wide x 17" deep. The one thing I found on it is that there are a couple of small pieces of veneer missing from the edge of the fold down desk front. My Mom had bought this desk back in 1990 and I think the pieces were missing then. There is also a small white smug on the front of the bottom drawer,that is a smug of white paint. My Mom apparently put it there by accident while painting something else. I do have the key for the lock for the desk top but the lock itself does not work. Continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring burl fruit woods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to a writing surface(that has a water stain) four drawers, and a compartment with a door.
