Condition: Seller refurbished Location: Lake Ariel, United States Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable ... moreshelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper cabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. See picture) There is also significant wear to the felted writing surface. No other significant damage or repairs. The entire desk stands about 88" 7'4" tall. Additional storage is found below the desk area consisting of an area with a ornate door measuring 20" x 14 1\2" deep. The drawer below this storage area measures 2" x 14 1\2" deep x 5" High. To the left of the desk is a tall shelf area with four adjustable shelves for storage or acting as a bookcase again having fine ornate wood carving over the glass door front. The ornate carvings on the front of the fold-down desk and upper glass door appear Victorian. Work is needed for refinishing this piece to bring it back to its original ... morebeauty. Up for your consideration today is our beautiful solid oak curio cabinet. Desk, secretary, bookcase, I call it all those things because depending on my mood its purpose changes. When I saved old ink wells and antique books it was set up as a victorian desk and bookcase complete with inkwell and quill pen. When I wanted to use it(as it is shown) to display my green depression glass, the glass shelves displayed that beautifully. It is a solid oak piece with all the original hardware and original beveled mirror. We did add the glass shelves. They were missing when we purchased this piece many years ago. It has a drop leave desk that hides all the little cubbies and small drawer. There is a storage closet and a larger drawer under the drop leave desk. We have the original key and it still works. There is intricate detail you can see if you zoom ... morein. We are moving so most of our treasures need to be sold. I PREFER PICK UP ONLY. I LIVE 25 MILES FROM BINGHAMTON. It works find on the glass door that encloses the glass shelves and it also works find on the drawer under the desk top. The mechanism is missing to lock the large door under the desk top. Antique Oak Secretary,Stained Glass,Circa 1900,Forest City Furniture of Rockford
Beautiful antique oak secretary with stained glass doors made by Forest City Furniture Company of Rockford Illinois. Forest City Furniture was located at Railroad Avenue at Eighth Street and operated from to 1919. It has carved claw foot legs on the front. The shelves are adjustable and movable between the top and bottom cabinets. The stained glass is a beautiful combination of of colors and shapes from right-angles to smooth curves. The original manufacturer's label is still attached to the back. The label lists the unit number. The cabinet maker, and who filled, varnished, rubbed, polished, trimmed and crated this particular piece. It measures 73.75" high by 34" wide and 18.25" deep. The top cornice molding looks to be a pine replacement but as you can see in the photos it blends in. The bottom cabinet doors were repaired ... morebefore I purchased it. The repairs are the two dark squares seen on the lower doors. Replacement veneer had been inserted and the varnish used darkened faster than the original finish.
