This Attractive writing desk is made out of solid wood, and it has a Victorian style medium/dark red/brown stain finish color that makes it look like Mahogany but it is definitely a hard wood that looks more like OAK to me. There is a slight curve to the front to the drawer sides which adds a very nice flair. The top is solid wood, not veneer. It is in it’s original condition so there are scratches on the desktop due to normal everyday wear. There is a Decorative edge that has been added to the edge of the top that may not have been original. In My Opinion this desk is in excellent condition other than the top which I would grade very good. LOOK At My Photos and make your own decision. This Attractive writing desk is made out of solid wood, and it has a Victorian style medium/dark red/brown stain finish color that makes it look like Mahogany but it is definitely a hard wood that looks more like OAK to me. There is a slight curve to the front to the drawer sides which adds a very nice flair. The top is solid wood, not veneer. It is in it’s original condition so there are scratches on the desktop due to normal everyday wear. There is a Decorative edge that has been added to the edge of the top that may not have been original. This lap desk was reportedly property from the estate of Ambassador George C. McGhee(1912-2005) McGhee was Ambassador to Turkey during 1951-1953. Prior to this he served as Chairman of the Interim Greek-Turkish Assistance Committee in1947. And was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East, South Asia and Africa(included Turkey) in 1949. Later he served as the U. S. Ambassador to Germany, 1963-1968.
