When fervor for antiques of the Louis XV taste were still at a remarkable high, this very attractive French Louis XV Bureau Plat was embellished with great effort. Featuring a solid mahogany top with a molded edge, the front of the bureau plat has a long hand dovetailed drawer for storage, opening to reveal a solid golden oak interior. The keyhole escutcheon is probably the finest bronze mount on the desk, a piece that prominently features the rocaille movement around the fully functioning key and lock. The apron is shapely, the front and back mirroring the flow of the top with a slight inversion in the middle. The cabriole legs are formed with very fine gate, the tapering form nearly perfect in proportion to the table, each surmounted with an intense rocaille Gilt bronze mount with the"C" form featured actively as it curls over the entire knee- a thin reed of gilt bronze continues to flow down the leg into the beautiful Gilt bronze sabot mounts with curling toes. This is a fully functional piece. Not just being a beautiful decorative art, the form being sturdy and strong throughout with a clean writing surface. For decorators passionate about the French Louis XV form, this is a wonderful find. Measurements: 39 1/2" wide x 23 7/8" deep x 29 1/4" high to top of desk; 24 1/8" high to underside of drawer(when sitting) Condition Report: Light dings and chips throughout. Including some loss to the corners of the drawer, a small"dent" in the top and scuffing to the top. Overall very attractive, the typical wear and use abrasions being somewhat limited and the overall desk being quite well preserved. The bronzes are of medium quality with some pitting and cracks from the foundry process- we believe the mounts are unsigned, though only one sabot has been removed and examined. Stamped on the underside"Made in Spain" the piece captures the spirit and vibrancy of the Louis XV period with utmost accuracy. The bronze mounts are exceptionally well done for the period, each almost entirely free of casting flaw, these filed and chiseled into perfection before being fire gilded. The female masks on the corners have a hammered texture, these being almost monumental in stature and projection from the legs. The top is a well preserved tooled gilt black leather edged in cross banded veneers and framed in a very thick gilt bronze rim with shell corners. One side of the desk has three drawers, all dovetailed, the other side with three faux drawer fronts. The entire desk rests over bold cabriole legs that terminate in scrolled sabots. While many bureau plats are available. Particularly from the second and third quarters of the 20th century, few meet the quality and precision standards of this exceptional piece. The mounts are very moving, the level of detail cast and chiseled into every casting setting the desk apart from it's peers in every way. The surface has been preserved quite handsomely, despite the typical use indicators on the top and writing surface. For anyone with a bold and vibrant library or office space, this is a piece that will set the pace for all other decor in that space. It is an investment grade selection built to last the test of time and will certainly be a cherished part of your collection for a lifetime. It is in excellent vintage condition and truly stunning. We removed all of the brass mounts from the legs and drawer pulls. They were all hand polished/cleaned removing years of tarnish and oxidation. We then sprayed them with a clear lacquer topcoat so they will maintain their lustre for years to come. The desk and chair were given a light restoration and cleaning. They were then both hand rubbed/polished with 2 coats of clear paste wax. We gave the chair's upholstery seat a cleaning with a professional hot steam extractor machine. The leather top is in excellent condition- no rips. Damage etc. This is a wonderful set with great contrast between the black lacquer and brass accents. It would make a great addition to any interior.
