Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. One of the first things that you notice are the large flanges on each end. Unlike most flanges. These are deeply cut out with an almost scroll like pattern. The bottom front edge of the top has a simple design. The two end drawers have nice carved details the other 3 have flush fronts. The contrasting color of the beaded detail around the drawers has a bamboo look. Below the drawers is a carved apron. Also with the bottom edge in contrasting color. The apron transitions into the gracefully shaped curved legs and feet. There is a single humpback stretcher on each end between the legs. Letter holders, file card drawers etc. It is a double pedestal desk with wainscot panel sides and back panels. The right pedestal has a pull out writing board over 3 dove tail joined drawers. The left pedestal has another pull up tambour door to reveal cabinet space. It is a large 55.25" by 32.25" executive size desk w. Overall height is47.75" high with the writing desk top at a standard 30" height from the floor. It has a blind front oak panel where the center drawer once sat but for some reason the previous owner chose to do away with the drawer and make a blind front oak board. The original drawer guides are still intact and you could easily add a drawer box to the panel to have a top center drawer again. Very nice tiger oak grain throughout with a natural oak finish on the wood. It un-assembles into 3 parts for transport, Two side columns and desktop with tmabour and, desk top and cubby space.
